Ireland v Scotland – Shinty / Hurling International …………. 1 Day To Go! | |
21 October 2011 Scotland boss Drew McNeil is looking for the sport of shinty to learn from the Shinty / Hurling international double-header with Ireland. Speaking to local radio station Cuillin FM ahead of the games, the Scotland Head Coach said, “The way the hurlers prepare for their sport is one of the ways shinty can gain from the international series. The hurlers have their own personalised programmes on top of their work with both their local hurling teams and their own county teams. So they have their training but they also have their own fitness and conditioning programme and some of these guys are getting towards being full time.” McNeil believes shinty can benefit by learning more about this. “The hurlers have athletic ability and core strength and they can almost be looked upon as boxers. They are more advanced than we are at that level so the spin-off is that our players will talk to the hurlers, hear what they are doing and take that information away with them.” “At the end of the day this international series is a vehicle for improving shinty. And it’s not just the players that should be learning but the coaches should be learning and the Camanachd Association should be learning from the GAA.” The Ireland and Scotland senior sides meet at Athy, Co. Kildare in the first test on Saturday 22 October 2011. The match may be streamed live over the internet by Irish channel TG4. There will be delayed coverage of the match on BBC ALBA at 4pm on Sunday 23 October 2011. The second test between Scotland and Ireland takes place at the Bught Park, Inverness on Saturday 29 October 2011. The match starts at 2pm and will be shown live on BBC2 Scotland if you are unable to make the game. The second test will be preceded by a Challenge Shinty / Camogie match between Scotland and the British Universities side which starts at 10.30am. The Scotland U21 and Ireland U21 sides clash at 12 noon.
