13 October 2011 The 2011 Royal National Mòd will open with the Mòd Cup shinty match between Uist Camanachd and Lewis Camanachd at Sgoil Lionacleit, Benbecula on Saturday 15 October 2011. The sides last contested shinty’s Mod Cup in 2005 when Uist grabbed the bragging rights when they came out on top in both senior and junior competitions involving players from Harris, Lewis as well as Uist. The festival of shinty took place at Sgoil Lionacleit, Benbecula on Friday 14 October 2005 with the fledgling Uist side hosting the event. Uist won the Lord of the Isles Trophy which was donated by Prince Charles. Lord Lieutenant of the Western Isles, Iain Macaulay handed over the trophy to Uist captain Keith MacDonald. Uist captain Duncan MacDonald was presented with the Mod Cup by An Comunn Gaidhealach’s Neil MacLeod. It was encouraging to see around 70 youngsters playing shinty and they were all given commemorative medals by An Comunn Gaidhealach.
