The Shinty Round Up - Saturday 24 September 2011 | |
25 September 2011 It was back to league action as Kyles Athletic and Newtonmore battle it out for the Scottish Hydro Premier Division title in a weather affected shinty programme on Saturday 24 September 2011. Scottish Hydro Premier DivisionOban Camanachd 1 Kyles Athletic 3 League leaders Kyles Athletic knew they had a tricky assignment as they headed for Mossfield to play Oban Camanachd. The home side e currently involved in a relegation battle with Inveraray and Lovat although they gave themselves a great chance of survival with a win over Fort William in their last outing. Oban Camanachd’s threat was emphasised when Iain MacMillan shot the home side into a 23 minute lead. It took Kyles until the hour mark to level and the goal came from an unfamiliar source as David Zavaroni netted. It looked like Kyles might drop a point until two late goals gave them a great victory. Roddy MacDonald put them in front for the first time in the game on 84 minutes and a Fraser MacDonald strike a couple of minutes from time gave them a 3-1 win and both points. Newtonmore 3 Inveraray 0 The other title contenders Newtonmore have enjoyed a week like no other for the last 25 years as they celebrated bringing the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup to the Eilan. However it was back to the serious business of defending their league title as they welcomed Inveraray to the Eilan. Inveraray were without the suspendedAndrewMacMurdo. Newtonmore boss Norman MacArthur was without Cameron Binnie who was working and Danny MacRae who had a back injury. David Cheyne only made an appearance as a late substitute as he was still suffering the effects of flu. The reigning champions showed little sign of a hangover though and Glen MacKintosh put them ahead on the half hour mark when he tucked the ball past Inveraray keeper Graeme MacPherson. Glen MacKintosh went on to complete his hat-trick with second half goals on 65 and 80 minutes and he even missed a penalty 5 minutes from time after referee Graham Cameron pointed to the spot. The reigning champions were solid in defence and their forwards forced visiting keeper Graeme MacPherson into a number of fine saves. Newtonmore remain a couple of points behind Kyles Athletic with an inferior goal difference and the sides are due to play eachother at Tighnabruaich next week. Glenorchy 0 Kingussie 7 The match between Glenorchy and Kingussie was switched to Taynuilt as the pitch at Dalmally was unplayable. The visitors eventually ran out 7-0 winners on a soft but playable field to go fourth in the table. The Kings are still dealing with the huge disappointment of losing last weekend’s Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup Final and manager Stevie Borthwick used the match as an opportunity to give some of his younger players some game experience. Kingussie were without keeper Andrew Borthwick, defenders Iain Borthwick, James Hutchison and Lee Bain, midfielders Paul Gow and Louis Munro as well as forward Ryan Borthwick. Craig Dawson took over in goal. Martin Dallas got the opener on 23 minutes and Ronald Ross got the only other goal of the first half 5 minutes before the break. Ronald Ross went on to complete his hat-trick with strikes on 58 and 69 minutes to make it 4-0. Hamish Anderson added to the Kings’ tally on 73 minutes and another youngster, Rory MacGregor scored his first senior goal to make it 6-0 on 87 minutes. Ronald Ross became the day’s top scorer when he notched his fourth goal a minute from time to make it 7-0. Kilmallie P Lovat P The game between Kilmallie and Lovat was postponed as the Canal Parks were deemed unplayable. This game is set to be rescheduled for Saturday 15 October 2011.
