The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 3 September 2011. | |
05 September 2011 There was cup success for both Newtonmore and Lochside Rovers and Kyles Athletic remain out in front in the race for the Scottish Hydro Premier Division title following the shinty matches played on Saturday 3 September 2011. Strathdearn Cup Final Glengarry 2 Newtonmore 3 Newtonmore won the 2011 Strathdearn Cup with a 3-2 win over Glengarry at Blairbeg. Chris Sellar gave Newtonmore the lead after 7 minutes and the same player gave his side a 2-0 lead on 20 minutes. Glengarry might have been rocked by ‘More’s start but they didn’t let it show as Stephen Brady pulled a goal back just 60 seconds later. However Ross Aitken restored Newtonmore’s two goal advantage on 27 minutes but ‘Garry again fought back as Kenneth Henderson scored a couple of minutes later. After five goals in the opening half hour, it was some-what of a surprise that there was no further scoring so Newtonmore went on to lift the regional trophy. This 3pm throw up was refereed by Daniel MacRae and he was assisted by goal judges Willie MacRae and Jock Matheson. Bullough Cup Final Aberdour 0 Lochside Rovers 5 Lochside Rovers beat Aberdour 5-0 to clinch the 2011 Bullough Cup. The final was originally scheduled to take place at the Meadows, Bute however the Island club was disappointed when heavy rain deemed their pitch unplayable. Both sides were consulted and they agreed to a transfer of venue to Aberdour’s pitch in Fife with a 3pm throw up. Lochside Rovers were convincing winners when the sides recently met in the league and they started strongly as David Devine put them ahead after just 2 minutes. Brian MacCallum on 20 minutes and Daniel MacKinnon 10 minutes later ensured the Oban side went into the break with a three goal advantage. David MacInnes netted on 68 minutes to make it 4-0 and Brian MacCallum’s second on 76 minutes sealed a 5-0 win and ensured the South’s area trophy headed to Oban. The final may have ended in disappointment for Aberdour but to even reach the big day must be seen as a massive achievement for a club celebrating only their tenth year in the game. Robert Baxter was the match referee and he was assisted by goal judges Dougie Cameron and Jim Innes. Scottish Hydro Premier Division Kyles Athletic 4 Fort William 1 Kyles Athletic stay top of the Scottish Hydro Premier Division with a 4-1 win in their 3pm throw up against Fort William at Tighnabruaich. Fort William went into the game without attacking players John MacDonald and Gary Innes. The absentees meant Michael Slezas was promoted from the Fort second team and he beat Kenny MacDonald to score after 17 minutes which cancelled out Dunkie Kerr’s 8 minute opener for Kyles. The sides remained level until the break but Kyles went 2-1 up within a minute of the restart when Thomas Whyte found the back of the net. Thomas Whyte grabbed his second to make it 3-1 on 63 minutes and Gordon Whyte made the points safe a couple of minutes later and the 4-1 win keeps the Tighnabruaich men out in front at the top of the table. Fort William forward Bryan Simpson was sent off by referee Graham Cameron. Kingussie 1 Newtonmore 6 Newtonmore remain hot on the heels of league leaders Kyles Athletic following their 6-1 win over Kingussie in the Badenoch Derby at the Dell. The teams went into the game with differing priorities with Newtonmore looking to retain the championship and Kingussie out of the title race. The sides are of course due to meet in the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup Final in a fortnight’s time. Kingussie bosses Stevie Borthwick and Russell Jones decided not to risk Ronald Ross who has an ankle knock and Lee Bain, Paul Gow, Louis Munro and Fraser Munro were also missing. Newtonmore’s David Cheyne returned to senior action following suspension however manager Norman MacArthur was without the services of Steven MacDonald and Ackie MacRae. The only goal of the first half in this 12 noon throw up came from Newtonmore’s Glen MacKintosh after 16 minutes. However the game sprung to life 4 minutes into the second period when Danny MacRae made it 2-0. ‘More went on to dominate the opening 20 minutes of the second half as their centre line took control of the midfield and the visitors were to score 4 goals in a devastating 9 minute burst. Glen MacKintosh added his second to make it 3-0 on 52 minutes from the penalty spot. Referee Graham Irving judged that a Kings’ defender had thrown his caman in the D with the home side claiming it had been knocked from his hand. David Cheyne was introduced to the play a minute later and he made an immediate impact seeing a shot saved by Andrew Borthwick. However Cheyne did find the back of the net to make it 4-0 on 55 minutes, just 2 minutes after coming on, and the ‘More forward line looked very direct following his inclusion. When Jamie Robinson shot home to make it 5-0 a couple of minutes later, there was no doubt where the points were heading. David Cheyne grabbed his second on 70 minutes and when Hamish Anderson netted on 74 minutes to make it 6-1, it was little more than a consolation goal for Kingussie. Newtonmore made several substitutions during the remainder of the game and the win leaves them breathing down the necks of leaders Kyles Athletic with the sides still to play at Tighnabruaich. Kyles next opponents are Kingussie at Tighnabruaich next weekend but Newtonmore can expect no favours from his neighbours as Kingussie are likely to field another understrength side with the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup Final only seven days away. It is unlikely that too much can be read into this result ahead of the “Scottish” because of the respective line-ups. Glenorchy P Inveraray P The match between Glenorchy and Inveraray was postponed as the pitch at Dalmally was deemed unplayable. Glenorchy are already relegated whilst Inveraray will look to take points from the rescheduled game against Glenorchy as their final games are away trips to the league’s top two sides – Kyles Athletic and Newtonmore. Kilmallie P Lovat P The match between Kilmallie and Lovat at the Canal Parks was postponed because of an unplayable pitch. John MacRae on 70 minutes and Steven Callander a couple of minutes later followed by Calum MacLean on 74 minutes were also on target for the champions. Stuart Callison and Shaun Nicolson scored for an under-strength Lochaber side who finish second in the league. Caberfeidh 3 Beauly 3 Caberfeidh and Beauly shared the points in their 3pm throw up at Castle Leod. Beauly were without Sean Stewart as a football injury has left him with a badly broken ankle and he could be out for some time. There is an importance attached to finishing second and third in the league as these slots win 2012 Macaulay Cup places. Beauly looked set to take the points when goals from player / manager Stephen MacLean after 16 minutes, and Connor Ross on 18 and 21 minutes, put them 3-0 ahead. Stuart Kryzanowski pulled a goal back for the home side on the half hour mark but Beauly took their two goal advantage into the break. Cabers’ Ally MacLennan made it 3-2 just 10 minutes into the second period and a Martin MacDonald goal 10 minutes from time earned Robbie Taylor’s side a share of the points. Newtonmore have been the best team in the division this season so they deserve their title success and they also have a Strathdearn Cup Final against Glengarry to look forward to at the weekend. Lochaber 4 Fort William 2 Lochaber ensured their league safety with a 4-2 win over Fort William in their 12 noon throw up at Spean Bridge. The Fort’s cause wasn’t helped when defender Cameron Grant was given a red card by referee John Angus Gillies on 17 minutes for reckless swinging. Lochaber’s Keith Neville scored the only goal of the first half 3 minutes before the break. Sean Cruickshank made it 1-1 on 49 minutes and David Duncan put the visitors ahead with a 62 minute strike.
