The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 11 June 2011 | |
14 June 2011 Kingussie and Newtonmore made it through to the Artemis Macaulay Cup semi final following what was a shortened shinty programme on Saturday 11 June 2011 with many clubs opting to take their “Free Saturday” to coincide with the Rockness Music Festival. Artemis Macaulay Cup – Second Round Kingussie 4 Lovat 1 Holders Kingussie will meet Newtonmore in the North semi final of the Artemis Macaulay Cup. The Kings clinched their last four spot with a 4-1 win over and Lovat at the Dell. Both sides examined their injury lists ahead of this meeting. Kingussie were still without Ally MacLeod who has a hamstring problem and fellow defender Lee Bain also missed out but Iain Borthwick and James Hutchison returned. Lovat continue to be without defensive pair James Grieve and Drew Howie but they were boosted by Lorne MacKay’s return to the side. Striker James Matheson returned after being cup-tied for the Glenorchy game last weekend. Kingussie got off to a great start when Ronald Ross netted after just 2 minutes. Both keepers, Andrew Borthwick for Kingussie and Lovat’s Stuart MacDonald, made good saves and there was no further scoring during the first period. Ronald Ross scored his and Kingussie’s second goal on 62 minutes to give the home side a crucial 2-0 lead. However Lovat battled back and Fraser Gallacher reduced the deficit to a single goal 5 minutes later. Kingussie extinguished any chance of a come-back though when Craig Dawson scored twice on 72 and 81 minutes put his side through. Kilmallie 0 Newtonmore 6 Both Kilmallie and Newtonmore came into their second round clash on the back of impressive Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup results last weekend. Whilst Newtonmore grabbed the headlines with their comprehensive 8-1 win over holders Fort William at the Eilan, Kilmallie swept aside Lochcarron with a 5-1 victory at Battery Park. Kilmallie were without two of their first choice forwards as both Liam MacDonald and Michael Rodger missed out. Danny MacRae netted five times last week and he seems to be relishing a role playing off the full forward position. This week MacRae scored the only goal of the first half when he fired past Kevin Toye after 34 minutes. MacRae made it 2-0 a minute into the second half and from then on it was an uphill struggle for Kilmallie. Danny MacRae completed his hat-trick on 70 minutes whilst Glen MacKintosh made it 4-0 on 79 minutes. There was still time for MacRae to get his fourth on 83 minutes and a last minute John MacKenzie effort completed a convincing 6-0 win to set up a Badenoch derby with Kingussie. Balliemore Cup - Semi Final Caberfeidh 4 Beauly 1 Competitions record winners Caberfeidh are through to the Balliemore Cup Final following a 4-1 win over Beauly at Balgate. Stewart Krzyzanoski scored the only goal of the first half just 5 minutes from the break. Ruairidh MacLennan got a second 10 minutes into the second period and his strike attracted some controversy with the ball going through a hole in the net! Beauly’s Barry MacDonald continued his good form when he pulled a goal back on 62 minutes but strikes from Kevin Bartlett on 71 minutes and Iain MacDonald on 83 minutes mean Cabers will try to win the trophy for the sixth time against either Lochaber of Bute in the final on 23 July 2011 at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Strathdearn Cup - Quarter Final Glengarry 3 Kingussie 2 Two goals in the last couple of minutes from John MacKinnon and Shaun Sloggie saw Glengarry come from 2-1 down to beat Kingussie 3-2 in a bad tempered clash at Invergarry. Glengarry were without suspended duo Michael Brady and Andrew Patterson who were both sent off in the league defeat at Newtonmore last weekend. Kingussie have been able to field strong sides for their cup matches this season with veteran Kevin Thain providing their main goal threat. Referee Graeme MacMillan awarded the home side a penalty after 18 minutes and Arran Clark made no mistake from the spot to give his side a 1-0 first half lead. However Kingussie burst into action when Kevin Thain scored on 50 and 75 minutes to give the Kings a 2-1 advantage. ‘Garry’s late, late come-back saw John MacKinnon net on 88 minutes and Shaun Sloggie a minute later to put them 3-2 in front. Kingussie’s Greg MacRae was sent off as was his manager Norman Dickson for his protests at a decision made by referee Graeme MacMillan. Caberfeidh 1 Glenurquhart 2 A 73 minute goal from Arran Ross meant Caberfeidh from Marine Harvest North Division 3 gave Glenurquhart, from a league above, a late fright at Castle Leod. However the holders, boosted by Kelvin MacKenzie’s return to the side now that the football season is over and his Inverness City commitments have ended, progressed to the last four thanks to goals from another youngster; Ewan Menzies on 6 and 11 minutes, Bullough Cup - Quarter Final Lochside Rovers 3 Strachur 2 Lochside Rovers and Strachur met in Oban. Lochside Rovers sit third in Marine Harvest South Division 1 and they were glad to have home advantage to a Strachur side which leads Marine Harvest South Division 2 and have only lost once in the league this season. Daniel MacKinnon got the home side off to a great start with a goal after just 2 minutes and Brian MacCallum made it 2-0 on 27 minutes. Referee Robert Baxter gave the visitors the chance to get back in the game when he awarded them a penalty a minute from the break. Iain MacLennan netted from the spot. Strachur’s Rhys Campbell completed the come-back when he made it 2-2 on 52 minutes. However a Malcolm Clark goal 12 minutes from time gave Lochside Rovers a semi final spot with a 3-2 win. Taynuilt 0 Tayforth 4 A Taynuilt second string, who have just entered the cup competitions, had home advantage against Tayforth who are in third place in Marine Harvest South Division 2, with games in hand over the sides above them. It was the visitors who secured a 4-0 win and Davie Arnott scored twice on 8 and 28 minutes to give them a two goal aadvantage at the break. Brendan Duggan made it 3-0 a minute into the second half and Kenny Campbell completed the scoring with a goal 15 minutes from time. Scottish Hydro Premier Division Fort William 9 Glenorchy 0 Fort William put the disappointment of last week’s Scottish Camanachd Cup exit behind them when brushed aside Glenorchy with a 9-0 win at An Aird. Fort manager Peter McIntyre gave Daniel Stewart a starting place in the side and he rewarded his manager’s faith with a first half hat-trick with goals on 29, 38 and 43 minutes. Gordie MacKinnon also scored twice in the first half with his efforts coming on 39 minutes and another on the stroke of half time. MacKinnon went on to complete his hat-trick on 62 minutes and a Gary Innes effort on 74 minutes made it 7-0. Bryan Simpson made it 8-0 with a great individual goal on 88 minutes whilst Innes bagged his second a minute from time. The Fort now go second on goal difference over Kingussie and Newtonmore although ‘More have a game in hand as they all chase leaders Kyles Athletic who hold a five point advantage. The win gives Fort William the perfect tonic ahead of their Co-operative MacTavish Cup Final against Kingussie this coming weekend. Their only concern is a foot injury picked up by Gordie MacKinnon. Marine Harvest North Division 1 Kinlochshiel 3 Strathglass 0 Kinlochshiel went two points clear at the top of the table with a 3-0 win over Strathglass at Kirkton. James Craig put the visitors ahead on the stroke of half time and Robert Walker made it 2-0 on the hour mark. Roberto Zavaroni sealed a 3-0 win with a strike 3 minutes from time. A miserable day for Ballachulish was completed when referee John MacLeod sent off Grant MacKenzie for accumulating two yellow cards. Glasgow Mid Argyll 7 Aberdour 2 Fulton Ross scored four times as second place Glasgow Mid Argyll maintained their title challenge with a 7-2 victory over Aberdour at Yoker. Ross opened the scoring after 20 minutes but Doug Newsom made it 1-1 just 4 minutes later. Angus MacIntosh restored Mid Argyll’s advantage with a 29 minute strike but Ruairidh Reid drew Aberdour level for a second time on 34 minutes. However the home side went 4-2 up with two goals in a minute. First Fulton Ross scored his second on 35 minutes whilst Andy Mathie was on target 60 seconds later. Fulton Ross then went on to score twice in a minute with goals on 57 and 58 minutes to make it 6-2. James Docherty netted on 74 minutes to complete a 7-2 victory. Kilmory sat in second bottom place ahead of this one whilst Taynuilt were fifth, four points better off than their rivals. Kilmory were without John Strachan who began a suspension. Alistair MacArthur scored Kilmory’s other goal whilst Michael MacQueen replied for Taynuilt. (more to follow) |
