Kingussie U14 1 Skye Camanachd U14 3 | |
10 June 2011 The Skye Camanachd U14 side are through to the second round of the MacMaster Cup following a good 3-1 win over Kingussie at the Dell on Saturday 4 June 2011. The first half of this encounter ended goalless with Skye edging a tight contest on possession. Kingussie keeper Lee Riddoch made some good saves whilst Skye defenders Iain MacLeod, Shaun Henderson, Kyle Pirie and Ally MacLeod were also on top form. However it was the home side which took the lead early in the second period. Savio Genini picked up a loose ball in midfield and fired past Raymond Gillies in the Skye goal to make it 1-0. This goal seemed to spur Skye on and they leveled 20 minutes into the half. Andrew Grant was given time to have three swings at the ball and he shot past Kings’ keeper Lee Riddoch into the corner of the net to make it 1-1. Skye took the lead straight from the throw up and it was Alex MacDonald who got on the end of the sweeping move to score from close range. The clinching goal came 5 minutes from time and it was Andrew Grant who notched his second strike of the game when he fired a good 25 yard strike into the back of the Kingussie net. This could prove to be significant win for Skye as they look to win the MacMaster Cup for the first time in several years. Will Cowie was the pick of the Skye players and he showed why he is a first choice in both the Skye Camanachd U17 and reserve teams. Andrew Grant also deserves credit for a good performance and for scoring at crucial times in the match. Kingussie were well served by Rory MacKeachan and Chris Holly Song in defence and Savio Genini at full centre. The only sour point for Skye was an injury to substitute Ally MacCrimmon which left the youngster with a broken thumb in three places.
