The Shinty Preview – Saturday 11 June 2011 | |
09 June 2011 There is a shortened shinty programme on Saturday 11 June 2011 with many clubs opting to take their “Free Saturday” to coincide with this weekend’s Rockness Music Festival which takes place in Inverness. Artemis Macaulay Cup – Second Round Kilmallie v Newtonmore Both Kilmallie and Newtonmore come into their second round clash on the back of impressive Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup results last weekend. Whilst Newtonmore grabbed the headlines with their comprehensive 8-1 win over holders Fort William at the Eilan, Kilmallie swept aside Lochcarron with a 5-1 victory at Battery Park. ‘More manager Norman MacArthur had considerable success playing Danny MacRae in a wing forward position against Fort William and no doubt Kilmallie bosses Peter Jackson, John Morrison and Lachie Innes will have spent time this week considering how to best combat this threat. ‘More’s David Cheyne made a mid-week return from injury for their reserve side against Lovat, scoring twice. Kilmallie also pose a significant threat up front and whilst John Stewart and Liam MacDonald have been their main marksmen, Peter McIntyre has chipped in with four goals in Kilmallie’s last three matches. Kingussie v Lovat Holders Kingussie and Lovat will examine their injury lists ahead of this meeting at the Dell. Kingussie won at Taynuilt last weekend without Ally MacLeod who has a hamstring problem. They were also minus the injured James Hutchison and longer term absentee Louis Munro. Lee Bain and Iain Borthwick both started on the bench to allow them more time to recover from knocks but they should both start this week. Lovat continue to be without defensive trio James Grieve, Drew Howie and Lorne MacKay. Martin Mainland has also missed recent games whilst Euan Ferguson did make a surprise appearance against Glenorchy last weekend but he is not fully fit. Striker James Matheson will return for Lovat after being cup-tied for the Glenorchy game. Balliemore Cup - Semi Final Caberfeidh v Beauly Caberfeidh and Beauly meet at Balgate with a spot in the final against Bute or Lochaber at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree up for grabs. Caberfeidh are the competitions record winners with five trophy successes to their name whilst Beauly have yet to win the competition. The sides occupy second and third place in Marine North Division 1 so this should be a close affair. Cabers hope to be at full strength whilst Beauly have a doubt over Innes Simpson who has missed recent games. Strathdearn Cup - Quarter Final Glengarry v Kingussie Glengarry have home advantage against Kingussie. However the home side will be without suspended duo Michael Brady and Andrew Patterson who were both sent off in the league defeat at Newtonmore last weekend. Kingussie have been able to field strong sides for their cup matches this season and Kevin Thain, if available, will provide their main goal threat as always. Caberfeidh v Glenurquhart Caberfeidh from Marine Harvest North Division 3 meet Glenurquhart from a league above at Castle Leod. The visitors have been boosted by Kelvin MacKenzie’s return to the side now that the football season is over and his Inverness City commitments have ended. Bullough Cup - Quarter Final Lochside Rovers v Strachur Lochside Rovers and Strachur meet in Oban. Lochside Rovers sit third in Marine Harvest South Division 1 and they will be glad to have home advantage to a Strachur side which leads Marine Harvest South Division 2 and have only lost once in the league this season. Taynuilt v Tayforth The Taynuilt second team, who have been formed for the cup competitions, have home advantage against Tayforth who are in third place in Marine Harvest South Division 2 but have games in hand over the sides above them. Scottish Hydro Premier Division Fort William v Glenorchy Fort William have the chance to put the disappointment of last week’s Scottish Camanachd Cup exit behind them when they play Glenorchy at An Aird. This is the only game in the top flight and a Fort win will take them level on points with Kingussie and Newtonmore who each trail leaders Kyles Athletic by 5 points although at the end of play on Saturday, ‘More will have a game in hand on the other three clubs. Marine Harvest North Division 1 Kinlochshiel v Strathglass It’s back to the bread and butter of league action for Kinlochshiel after their Scottish Camanachd Cup exploits last weekend when they knocked Scottish Hydro Premier Division side Glenurquhart out of the competition. They face a Strathglass team who have picked up points from draws with Beauly and Inverness in their last two outings. ‘Shiel manager Johnston Gill has concerns over keeper Graham Kennedy who has a groin muscle injury. Defender John Don MacKenzie did a good job when he pulled on the keeper’s jersey for the last 20 minutes of the game but reserve goalie Iain Cameron is a more likely replacement for this clash. However defender Mark MacDonald is available again following a one match ban. Colin Chapman is suspended for Strathglass. A large crowd is expected for the west coast’s only Saturday fixture. Marine Harvest South Division 1 Ballachulish v Bute There is a double header between the Ballachulish and Bute senior and reserve sides at Jubilee Park. The senior clash comes after the noon second team meeting between the clubs. Bute have won six out of six in the league which includes a 3-1 win over Ballachulish on Rothesay earlier in the season with Gordon MacMillan, Robert Walker and Graham Fisher on target and Dougie Rankin getting a last minute goal for Ballachulish. Glasgow Mid Argyll v Aberdour Glasgow Mid Argyll and Aberdour meet at Yoker. Second place Mid Argyll will start as favourites against the league’s bottom side and this is exactly the type of game they must win to maintain their promotion push. Kilmory v Taynuilt Kilmory are at home to Taynuilt. Kilmory sit in second bottom place in the league whilst fifth place Taynuilt are four points better off with both sides having played six games. Kilmory will be without John Strachan who begins a suspension.
