Skye Camanachd U17 2 Kinlochshiel U17 1 | |
31 May 2011 The Skye Camanachd U17 side beat Kinlochshiel U17 2-1 in the first round of the MacTavish Juvenile Cup at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Tuesday 3 May 2011. The Skye youngsters attacked their neighbours from the throw up and took the lead after just 7 minutes. Will Cowie cut in a ball from the left which found Andrew Grant in front of goal and he fired the ball into the net. Skye continued to press and a break through the middle of the ‘Shiel defence on 19 minutes saw a Will Cowie shot well saved by keeper Hugh MacRae with his stick. The rebound fell for Jordan Murchison but MacRae saved again; this time with his feet. Skye were made to pay for not making more of their early opportunities when the visitors equalised on 19 minutes. A ball from the ‘Shiel midfield cut open the Skye defence. As his defenders hesitated, keeper Iain MacLeod came off his line to clear the ball ahead of the on-rushing Jordan Fraser. However the clearance fell for Alasdair Nixon on the ‘Shiel right and he picked his spot to drive a shot through a ruck of players and the unsighted MacLeod to make it 1-1. Andrew Grant almost scored his second on the half hour mark but his shot came off the post and John Gillies put the rebound wide of goal. Skye went close again a couple of minutes later. Chris MacLennan played a ball in from the right which was missed by the ‘Shiel defence and left John Gillies through on goal. However Duncan James managed to get a challenge in before Gillies could execute a finish. Will Cowie set up Andrew Grant after 35 minutes but his shot rose just over the bar. Jordan Murchison shot into the side net a minute before the break with Cowie again the provider. Iain MacLeod in the Skye goal made a good save with his feet from an Oliver MacRae shot 9 minutes into the second half. Skye created a good opening 5 minutes later. An Andrew Grant ball found John Gillies who played a great reverse pass to Will Cowie and his shot was heading for the roof of the net before Hugh MacRae made a fine save with his caman. A Will Cowie free hit from the left on 22 minutes found Chris MacLennan in space on the right and his shot took a deflection off a defender which diverted it past the post for a corner. With 10 minutes remaining, Shaun Hedley won a ball in midfield and passed forward to Andrew Grant who knocked the ball to Will Cowie. However Hugh MacRae made a good save with his feet from Cowie’s shot and the keeper cleared the ball for a corner. A minute later a John Gillies shot come off keeper MacRae’s foot and this was Gillies’ last action of the game as he was replaced by Magnus Burd for the final 9 minutes. Burd was immediately in the thick of the action and the ‘Shiel defenders found him a difficult opponent. With 3 minutes remaining, Chris MacLennan played in a corner from the right. Magnus Burd knocked the ball down into the path of Andrew Grant and he laid the ball back to Jordan Murchison who had found space around the penalty spot. Murchison’s bullet shot flew into the net to put Skye 2-1 in front and this proved to be the winning goal. This was a good performance from the Skye youngsters and their only failing seemed to be converting their many chances into more goals. Ally MacLeod at buckshee back was the pick of the Islanders’ performers. ‘Shiel’s best performers were in defence, in particular keeper Hugh MacRae and full back Duncan James.
