Kingussie 8 Skye Camanachd 1 | |
29 March 2011 The Skye Camanachd second team lost 8-1 to Kingussie at the Dell in Marine Harvest North Division 2 on Saturday 26 March 2011. Skye Camanachd manager Davie MacVicar made 6 changes to the side which lost to Fort William the previous week. Skye Camanachd U14 keeper Iain MacLeod started in goal in place of John MacLeod who was unavailable. Paul MacKinnon, Darryl Macintosh, John MacKenzie and Iain MacLellan also came in to the starting line up. Ally MacDonald dropped onto the bench as he was to be a first team substitute later in the day and his place on the field was taken by Ally MacLeod who was a sub the previous week. John Gillies came into the squad and he started on the bench. Neil MacVicar, Jordan Murchison, Danny Morrison and Stewart Grant returned to first team duty. Kingussie were without veteran striker Kevin Thain who was unavailable. Striker Rory Borthwick was carrying an injury so he played in goal. The Islanders found themselves 6 goals in arrears in the opening 12 minutes as Kingussie’s potent, young attack were afforded too much time and space in the early part of the game and they carved through the Skye rear-guard at will. Kingussie buckshee forward, and former Lovat player, Duncan Davidson played a prominent role in all Kingussie’s attacking moves and netted a brace as did Martin Dallas which left Skye 4-0 behind in the opening 8 minutes. There was little Iain MacLeod in the Skye goal could do to prevent the goals which were finished in style. Kingussie made it 5-0 on 10 minutes when a Jake MacPherson effort was cruelly deflected past young MacLeod. Russell Menzies made it 6-0 soon after as Skye looked to be in for a torrid afternoon. The introduction of Ally MacDonald at left wing back on the quarter hour mark helped to steady the defence, while Calum Gibb was introduced to the midfield at the same time. Skye created their best move of the game on the half hour mark when neat work involving Darryl Macintosh and Ally MacLeod set up John MacKenzie who sent a rasping drive just wide of the Kingussie goal. During another Skye attack young Ally MacLeod could only find the side netting when forced wide by the Kingussie defender. With Skye losing the midfield battle, Kingussie bagged another 2 goals before half time with Brian Mabon and the impressive Davidson netting to complete his hat-trick. Skye came out in the second half with renewed energy and with John MacKenzie dropping back to wing centre and Darryl MacIntosh beginning to exert his influence at full centre; the Skye forward line saw much more of the ball. As Skye continued to press, MacKenzie fired another effort just wide and this was quickly followed by a John Gillies strike which went only inches the wrong side of the keeper’s left hand post. Kingussie were rarely seen as an attacking threat in the second half, with the Skye defence coping well and young MacLeod in goal rarely called into action. In the next Skye attack, Kingussie keeper Rory Borthwick made a smart save from Iain MacLellan. Just 10 minutes later, Borthwick made a fine double save from MacLellan and Daniel Morrison and the ball was cleared at the expense of a corner. In an attempt to get a grip of the game, Kingussie introduced veteran Camanachd Cup winner Michael Clark at wing centre in place of young MacPherson. Skye eventually got the goal their play deserved when a long range effort from Iain MacLellan crept in at the right hand post. Skye almost doubled their tally 5 minutes later when a long ball from Macintosh was only cleared as far as Allan MacKinnon but his fiercely struck 20 yard grounder was straight at keeper Borthwick who cleared the danger. Whilst the end result was a big disappointment, the second half Skye performance was more praiseworthy and could have yielded more goals. In a disappointing team performance, Skye were well served by Iain Grant, John MacKenzie and substitutes John Gillies and Ally MacDonald who did a great job in shoring up the Skye back line.
