Skye Camanachd 0 Fort William 3. | |
20 March 2011 The Skye Camanachd second team went down to a 3-0 defeat to Fort William at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree in Marine Harvest North Division 2 on Saturday 19 March 2011. Skye Camanachd boss Davie MacVicar made 3 changes from the pool which lost to Kinlochshiel the previous weekend. Danny Morrison came into the squad as the first team game was postponed. He was joined by Calum Gibb, and Ally MacLeod. Shaun Hedley, Iain Morrison and Will Cowie were the players to miss out. Fort William were without Neil Clark and Shaun Cruickshank. Fort William started the game with a strong wind at their backs and Skye fell behind after just 5 minutes when referee Robert Morrison awarded the visitors a penalty. Skye keeper John MacLeod was penalised as he fell on the ball when making a save. Fort William full forward Jack Fraser blasted the spot-hit high into the net. Skye immediately responded and just 60 seconds later, Fort William keeper Cal Brown was forced to make a good save with his hand from a 25 yard Danny Morrison effort. Skye keeper John MacLeod chested away a lob from distance from Fort William wing centre Aaron MacPhee after 11 minutes. The Skye forwards linked up well on 15 minutes. Allan MacKinnon passed to Ally MacDonald who played a superb return ball to the onrushing MacKinnon. His cross was met by Jordan Murchison but Brown saved the Skye youngster’s effort and cleared the danger. A minute later Skye fell two goals behind. Daniel Stewart collected the ball with his back to goal on the Fort William right. However he was allowed enough space to turn and he blasted the ball into the roof of the net and put his side 2-0 in front. Fort William made it 3-0 on 26 minutes. Daniel Stewart played the ball across goal to Davie Duncan on the left. Duncan was allowed spaced to switch the ball from his left to right and he sent a harmless looking shot towards goal. Skye keeper John MacLeod thought the ball was running past the post so he let it run. However to the keeper’s horror, the ball crept into the net at his right post. Skye pressed to get the goal that would get them back into the game and Fort William keeper Cal Brown saved well with his feet from Allan MacKinnon. Just 3 minutes later Skye keeper MacLeod was called into action and he saved well with his foot from Jack Fraser. The final chance of the half fell to Skye when they were awarded a free hit 20 yards from goal for a foul on Jordan Murchison. However the Islanders failed to create a scoring opportunity from the dead ball. Skye suffered a blow when defender Scott MacLeod was forced to go off just before the break with a leg knock and he was replaced by Calum Gibb. Skye started the second half on the offensive and keeper Brown was forced to clear his lines with MacDonald and Murchison set to pounce. Cal Brown saved a low shot from Ally MacDonald with his foot on 54 minutes and the ball spun away for a corner. Brown again saved with his feet from Allan MacKinnon on 65 minutes as Skye continued to press. Indeed the Islanders enjoyed the bulk of possession during remainder of the game and although Murchison, MacKinnon and MacDonald all had chances, there was to be no further scoring. Referee Robert Morrison had to intervene in the closing minutes when Fort William’s Michael Slezas reacted to a tackle from Skye’s Allan MacKinnon and a scuffle involving several players broke out. However both MacKinnon and Slezas shared a hug and referee Morrison was persuaded to let both players off with a stern lecture. Skye were well served by Neil MacVicar and Iain Grant who had a good second half. Calum Gibb also did well in his substitute appearance and he made a number of telling clearances.
