22 February 2011 There were several pre-season friendlies on Saturday 19 February 2011. Lovat won the 2011 Thomas Ferguson Challenge Cup when they beat Skye Camanachd 5-2 at Balgate. A Greg Matheson double and strikes from James MacPherson, Ryan Ferguson and Euan Ferguson counted for Lovat whilst Alan Palmer and Jordan Murchison replied for Skye. Just down the road at Braeview Park, Beauly went down 6-3 to Fort William. The home side gave the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup holders a fright when they led 3-1 at one stage in the game. Jack MacDonald scored twice for Beauly whilst Conor Ross got the other. The Fort were several players short of their full squad and played Scotland defender Duncan Rodger in attack. The move paid off as Rodger grabbed a hat-trick, Ryan Campbell scored twice and Gary Innes got the other Inverness had a double header against Oban opposition at the Bught Park, Inverness. The Inverness reserve side lost 6-0 to Lochside Rovers in the day’s early game whilst their first team led Oban Camanachd 2-0 with only 10 minutes remaining later in the afternoon but they had to settle for a 2-2 draw. Kingussie were back in action as they beat Caberfeidh 6-1 at the Dell. Thomas Borthwick and Craig Dawson hit doubles whilst James Hutchison and Louis Munro got the others. The Kingussie squad included former Lovat player Duncan Davidson. Scottish Hydro Premier Division champions Newtonmore made their first appearance of the season and ran out convincing 9-1 winners against Lochaber at Spean Bridge. Glenurquhart and Lochcarron were to have met at Blairbeg but the match has been postponed because of a bereavement in Lochcarron. Glengarry trailed Inveraray 3-1 at half time before eventually going down 5-2 in what was a good game between the sides. The Glenurquhart second team makes the short journey to Farr to play Boleskine. The home side came from 2-1 down to earn a 2-2 draw. A Duncan MacKinnon goal was not enough for the Lochaber second team as they went down 6-1 to the Ballachulish first team. A Jack Fraser goal wasn’t enough for the Fort William second team as they went down 2-1 to Oban Celtic at Mossfield. Meanwhile Ardnamurchan headed for Canal Parks to play Kilmallie but they went down 12-1 against strong opposition. Development side Strathspey enjoyed a morale boosting 3-1 win over Ballachulish at Jubilee Park. Keith Callum was amongst the goals for the second weekend in a row. |
