A Message From Northern California Camanachd. | |
08 January 2011 Skye Camanachd this week received a message from Northern California Camanachd President Michael Bentley. Hello and Happy New Year to you all! I wanted to pass along some news about a project we've been working on for a little while; something that I think will be of interest. Although we have been playing our Sixes League for three years now, we have not had a league trophy. A few options have been considered but nothing came together. Cut to our 2009 visit to Skye Camanachd and a day out with Skye Camanachd Chairman Ross Cowie.
We stopped for a visit with the "mayor" of Dunvegan, a certain John MacRae, who gave me some small decorative camans he'd made. When I got home and pulled these items out of my bag I got an idea and from this gift sprang the MacRae Shield. It took a while to get the actual trophy together, but with the effort of a couple of club members we finally did manage to complete the trophy in time for presentation after our Hogmanay beach match yesterday.
The camans and ball that John gave me have been mounted on a California Redwood shield. The plates on the side commemorate each league champion, and the large plate at the bottom reads: The MacRae Shield Northern California Camanachd League Thanks to you all for fostering the relationship between our clubs. I look at this trophy as way honouring Skye Camanachd as well as providing our club with a great trophy to passed down through the years.
Hope that 2011 is a happy and healthy year for you all, and I look forward to seeing you in September! Michael Bentley |
