08 November 2010 The 2010 Opel GPA team of the year includes two hurlers who will take the field against Scotland in the Marine Harvest Shinty / Hurling international at the Bught Park, Inverness on Saturday 30 October 2010. Kilkenny duo Jackie Tyrell and Tommy Walsh, who captains the Irish side again this year, were both selected. Jackie Tyrell captained the Irish U21s to victory in 2003 and he is one of the most accomplished defenders in the country. Tyrell has 4 GAA All-Stars and 4 All-Ireland medals. He was handed the task of marking Ronald Ross in the first test. Tommy Walsh captained the Irish to victory at the Bught Park in 2009 and he received his eighth successive GAA All-Star this year. Former Cork manager Donal O’Grady, the chairman of the selection committee, said: “It is a special honour to be recognised by your fellow hurlers and I would like to pay tribute to the 15 chosen by the players on this year's Opel GPA Hurling Team of the Year. As a selection committee we chose who we believed were the three most deserving nominees for each position along with six midfielders, and the players then made the ultimate choice.” |
