The Saturday Shinty Snapshot – 11 September 2010! | |
11 September 2010 Ahead of the weekly Shinty Round Up, the headlines from the shinty matches played on Saturday 11 September 2010 are……….. Strathdearn Cup Final A Kelvin MacKenzie double won the 2010 Strathdearn Cup for Glenurquhart as they beat Lovat 2-1 in the final at Braeview Park, Beauly. Kelvin MacKenzie put Glenurquhart ahead on 35 minutes and the Glen took this lead into the break. MacKenzie added his and Glenurquhart’s second on the hour mark and although Greg Matheson pulled a goal back for Lovat 5 minutes later, Glenurquhart held on to take the cup to Drumnadrochit. Scottish Hydro Premier Division Newtonmore have one hand on the championship following a fantastic 4-0 win over Inveraray at the Winterton. Danny MacRae got his side off to a whirlwind start with goals in the first and second minutes. Glen MacKintosh made it 3-0 on 10 minutes and MacRae ended the game as a contest when he completed his hat-trick 10 minutes later. Inveraray’s cause wasn’t helped when full back Scott Robertson was sent off by referee Graham Cameron 5 minutes into the second period. Newtonmore’s goal difference is such that a draw against Fort William at An Aird in 3 weeks’ time will probably be enough to give them the title. Fort William stayed on the title trail with a 3-1 win over Oban Camanachd at Mossfield. An Iain MacMillan goal looked to have given Oban and interval lead but Bryan Simpson, returning after injury, levelled on the stroke of half time. Gary Innes put the visitors ahead on 58 minutes and he made it 3-1 just 10 minutes from time. There were 3 players booked – all Fort William defenders – Adam Robertson, John MacLeod and former Oban Camanachd player Liam MacIntyre. Glenurquhart secured their top division status with a 3-1 win over Bute at Blairbeg. Eddie Tembo scored the only goal of the first half and Calum Miller added a second just 2 minutes into the second period. Robert Walker pulled a goal back a couple of minutes later but an unfortunate own goal from Bute’s Scottish international Iain MacDonald gave the home side a 3-1 win. This game was extremely tight and the Glen have returning keeper Stuart MacKintosh to thank for several good saves including two penalty stops. Kingussie erased last week’s defeat to Newtonmore from their minds with a 6-1 win over Lovat at Balgate. Ronald Ross returned to the side to bag a hat-trick, James Hutchison scored a goal in each half and Thomas Borthwick got the other. Euan Ferguson scored a consolation goal for the home side. Marine Harvest North Division 1 The title race looks like it’s going down to the wire after Lochaber and Kilmallie won again this weekend. Shaun Nicolson was Lochaber’s main man as he scored 5 goals in the leaders’ 8-1 demolition of Strathglass at Spean Bridge which retained his side’s single point lead at the top of the table. John Stewart continued his hot streak in front of goal with a brace in Kilmallie’s 6-2 victory over Beauly at Canal Parks. A Danny Morrison goal on 59 minutes earned Skye Camanachd a 1-1 draw with Caberfeidh at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree after Martin MacDonald had given Caber’s a 6 minute lead. The match between Kinlochshiel and Lochcarron was postponed as the heavy rain deemed Kirkton unplayable. Marine Harvest South Division 1 Fourth place Taynuilt were 2-0 winners at third place Kilmory. Marine Harvest North Division 2 Beauly have been relegated following Kilmallie’s 6-1 win over Kingussie at Canal Parks. Beauly had held a 2 point advantage going into today’s game but doubles from Mark Graham and Ross Manson helped Kilmallie to a convincing 6-1 win and they stay up on goal difference. Beauly now return to Marine Harvest North Division 3 following their promotion last season. Marine Harvest North Division 3 Kenny Forsyth scored a hat-trick as Lochaber over-powered Boleskine 4-0 to finish level on points at the top of the table with Aberdeen University. There will now be a play-off between the sides to determine the league champions. Alan Ross scored 4 as third place Caberfeidh beat fourth place Lochbroom 7-1. |
