22 August 2010 Portree Primary School went down 4-1 to Kingussie Primary School in the MacKay Cup North Final at Battery Park, Lochcarron on Wednesday 18 August 2010. The Portree youngsters beat Banavie to reach this stage whilst Kingussie won through with victory over Lochaber. Portree have won the national MacKay Cup for the last 2 years and they met Kingussie in the Tulloch League semi final with the Islanders winning a close contest. Kingussie started the game well and pressured the Portree defence from the throw up. They took the lead on 8 minutes when Portree keeper Iain Patrick MacKenzie made a good save from a Dillon Borthwick shot from outside the D but James Falconer was first onto the rebound to slam the ball into the net. Kingussie’s second goal was similar to the opener. MacKenzie made a good save from Dillon Borthwick but Borthwick followed up to blast the rebound into the net. Portree withstood some more pressure before they pulled a goal back on 21 minutes when Ben Nicolson latched onto a pass into the danger area to sweep the ball into the net. It could have made all the difference if Portree could have reached the break just a goal behind. However with just a minute of the first half remaining, Portree keeper MacKenzie saved from Liam Borthwick and Roddy Young lashed the rebound into the net. Kingussie were certainly the dominant side in the first half but the second period belonged to Portree. However they found it really difficult to break down a Kingussie defence in which Alexander Michie and Sammy Penman were outstanding. Portree’s Stewart Taylor was fouled on the right. The free hit broke to Taylor and he saw a good first time volley stopped on the Kingussie goal line by keeper Robert Shields. Taylor again went close moments later when he saw a shot fly across goal. James Pringle played in Connor Ross 5 minutes from the end but his shot went past the post. Ross burst through again a couple of minutes later and when his initial shot was blocked, he sent the rebound just wide of the target. Portree were hit with a classic sucker punch a minute from time when Kingussie broke and Dillon Borthwick drifted into space before shooting home to make it 4-1. Kingussie’s buckshee forward Ruari Anderson also caught the eye and was involved in several good moves, especially in the first half. This is the first 12 a side match Portree have lost for 3 years and Kingussie will now be the North’s representatives against St Columba's Primary School from the South in the MacKay Cup Final in Oban on Saturday 21 August 2010.
