The Skye Camanachd second team had a 4-1 win over Kilmallie in Marine Harvest North Division 2 at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 14 August 2010.
The Skye side which took the field against Kilmallie showed 8 changes from the line-up that finished the game against Glenurquhart the previous week.
Allan MacKinnon, Iain Morrison, Neil MacVicar, Donnie Campbell, Stewart Grant and keeper Michael Nicolson were all first team call-ups with Andrew Banks injured. Martin Bruce was also to have been on first team duty but had to withdraw because of a groin injury picked up in the U17 win over Kingussie during the week. However when an unwell Jordan Murchison pulled out of the squad at lunchtime and Paul MacKinnon called off as he was stranded in Inverness, Bruce was added as a late substitute.
John “Podge” MacLeod returned in goal for his second appearance of the season. Calum Gibb and Scott MacLeod were called up from the U17s and Angie MacDonald was included at full forward. Veteran Peter Gordon returned in attack as did Scott Martin in midfield where he was joined by player / manager Davie MacVicar.
Captain David Grant was still on holiday whilst Darryl McIntosh will likely miss the rest of the season with a broken thumb.
Ally MacDonald switched to full back from full forward the previous week and he took the captains armband for the first time.
Kilmallie, with several teenagers in their ranks, were also understrength with the opening of the football season and injury robbing them of stalwarts Steven MacAllister, Graham Mitchell and Mark Kelly.
Kilmallie had the claim to having John MacIsaac in goal and his sons Connor and Craig in the starting line-up whilst his 13 year old son Alexander was on the substitutes bench.
Skye elected to play into the slight breeze in the first half and they struggled to get into the game during the opening quarter of an hour.
Despite Kilmallie’s early pressure, John MacLeod in the Skye goal was rarely troubled, with the only real threat coming from a Robbie MacFadyen drive that went wide of MacLeod’s left hand post.
The makeshift Skye team then began to get a foothold in the game with Angie MacDonald and Peter Gordon both firing narrowly past after good build up play between Calum Gibb and Malcolm Moir.
The Skye pressure finally paid off on 20 minutes when a Scott Martin corner found Peter Gordon wide on the left and despite John MacIsaac in the Kilmallie goal saving Gordon’s drive, he couldn’t prevent Angie MacDonald from sweeping home the rebound.
Player / manager MacVicar saw a shot drift just wide after being played in by Peter Gordon, and despite creating several further openings in the first half Skye failed to add to their tally with an Angie MacDonald drive that was saved by MacIsaac being the closest they came.
Scott MacLeod came on in place of Calum Gibb at the break with Neil John Campbell moving into the attack.
Skye took hold of the game from the start of the second half and went 2-0 up inside the opening 10 minutes of the half when Davie MacVicar picked up the ball in midfield and sent a lofted drive past the despairing MacIsaac and into the roof of the Kilmallie net.
With a comfortable 2-0 lead, the MacVicar left the field to be replaced by Martin Bruce who took over the full centre role.
Skye continued to have the better of the second half and they went 3-0 up when Peter Gordon played the ball wide to Angie MacDonald in the right wing forward position and the big forward sent a scorching drive into the back of the Kilmallie net.
As Skye continued to create openings, Peter Gordon was twice denied in the space of 2 minutes when John MacIsaac pulled of superb saves high above his head from a couple of rocket shots.
Gordon was not to be denied though and finally got on the scoresheet after good work by Neil John Campbell and Angie MacDonald.
With Skye looking for more goals, Malcolm Moir spurned a glorious chance for a fifth from the edge of the D.
Kilmallie still posed a threat on the break and John MacLeod had to be alert to turn a Ross Manson drive around the post.
With 10 minutes remaining Kilmallie scored a consolation goal when John MacLeod saved another Manson drive but with the ball stuck under his feet and Sebastian MacMillan knocked it home.
This would be MacMillan’s last contribution as he was shown a straight red card moments later for talking out of turn to referee Daniel MacRae.
