Leaders Newtonmore were not in action so second place Fort William took the chance to reduce ‘More’s lead at the top of the table to just 2 points when they beat Bute 4-3 in an exciting match on Rothesay. The Fort were without the suspended Steven Stewart following his sending-off against Kingussie last week. Gary Innes also missed out as he was playing with his band in Barra. Bute had a torrid time against Inveraray last weekend but they are a proud side who are difficult to beat on their own patch. Goals from Gordie MacMillan after 20 minutes and David Whitelaw 10 minutes later put Bute 2-0 up. However 2 goals in 3 minutes just before the break from Gordie MacKinnon after 41 minutes and James Clark on 43 minutes leveled things at the interval. Robert Zavaroni, who returned following suspension, put Bute ahead again 5 minutes into the second half. However the Fort produced another 2 goals in 3 minutes when MacKinnon added his second on 52 minutes and Bryan Simpson made it 4-3 on 55 minutes to the Fort. There was no further scoring and the Fort have 2 games in hand to overhaul Newtonmore’s 2 point lead. Third place Inveraray were too strong for bottom side Glasgow Mid Argyll at Yoker, running out emphatic 11-1 winners. Inveraray put 9 goals past Bute last weekend and they, along with Kingussie, are the only two sides that can do shinty’s “Grand Slam” this season. Mid Argyll received a blow with the news that Iain Murray has a broken collar-bone which will rule him out for the rest of the season. Euan MacMurdo, Neil Andrews and Neil Campbell all scored hat-tricks for the visitors whilst Garry MacPherson and Chris Crawford got the others. Mark Bain netted again for Glasgow Mid Argyll. Relegation threatened Oban Camanachd really needed to take something from their trip to Tighnabruaich to play Kyles Athletic. Oban were without suspended midfielder Gary Lord. A late Peter Currie double after 73 and 80 minutes saw Kyles Athletic win. Kyles had led 2-0 at the break through Thomas Whyte on 25 minutes and David Zavaroni 5 minutes before the break but second half goals from Iain MacMillan on 5 minutes and Aiden MacIntyre on 70 minutes made it 2-2 before Currie’s double. The surprise result of the day was probably in the 1pm throw up at the Dell where Kingussie and Lovat shared the points with a 2-2 draw. All the goals came in the first half as Fraser Gallagher put the visitors ahead after 2 minutes but a Ronald Ross double on 6 minutes and 15 minutes gave Kingussie the advantage. Ross also hit the post 4 times during the game but it was Gallagher who scored a terrific second goal to keep the sides level at the break. Kingussie introduced absentees Iain Borthwick, Fraser Munro and Ricky Grant at the break but Lovat held on to earn a valuable point from a terrific match. Indeed the visitors passed up a late chance to win the game. Third place Lochaber were too strong for fourth place Beauly when the sides met at in Marine Harvest North Division 1 at Braeview Park. Beauly were without the services of keeper Martin Davidson who started a 2 match ban following his sending off against Skye Camanachd last weekend. Full centre Connor Cormack was also missing after breaking his leg in training last week. Forward Marc MacLauchlan was also unavailable. Lochaber were without Lachlan Campbell who is on holiday but buckshee back Neil MacDonald returned after injury. Shaun Nicolson put Lochaber ahead on 28 minutes and a Donald MacRae goal on 42 minutes gave them a 2-0 half time lead. Ben Delaney made it 3-0 for the visitors on 65 minutes whilst Donald MacRae added his second 5 minutes later to make it 4-0. Beauly captain Sean Stewart pulled a goal back a couple of minutes after but Donald MacRae completed his hat-trick 8 minutes from the end. The win takes Lochaber top of the league on goal difference. Inverness and Caberfeidh met at the Bught Park. Cabers led 4-0 at the break with Kirk Taylor, Iain MacDonald and Kevin Bartlett amongst the scorers. But a great home side fight-back saw a Liam Girvan double on 57 minutes and 65 minutes and a Fraser Heath strike on 70 minutes bring the score back to 4-3 but Inverness just couldn’t get the equalising goal. The match of the day in this division was in Portree where Skye Camanachd and Kilmallie shared the points following a 2-1 draw. Alan MacPherson and Scott Livingston were amongst the goals for Glenorchy whilst David Campbell replied for the home side. This was a fiery match and if Glenorchy win their final fixture in Oban against Lochside Rovers on 14 August 2010, then they will have a perfect record of 12 wins out of 12 in the league this season. Inveraray were been boosted by last week’s victory over Kilmory and this week they beat Lochside Rovers 5-1 at the Winterton. They had Russell MacKinlay in their side again and he scored but Gordon Pirie grabbed the headlines with a hat-trick. John MacKenzie got the other whilst David Devine replied for Lochside Rovers. Second top Oban Celtic hosted second bottom Ballachulish and ran out 5-3 winners. Kenny Wotherspoon put Celtic ahead after 7 minutes but David MacPhee made it 1-1 a minute later. Alan Duffy put the home side in front on 16 minutes but David MacPhee equalised again a couple of minutes later. An Alan Miller goal on 27 minutes gave Celtic a 3-2 advantage at the break. Kenny Wotherspoon completed his hat-trick on the hour mark although an Andy Young goal on 83 minutes pulled the final score back to 5-3 in Oban Celtic’s favour. Glengarry took the chance to increase their lead at the top of Marine Harvest North Division 2 when they beat Skye Camanachd 4-1 at Invergarry. Davie Borthwick ended an illustrious shinty playing career with the Kingussie following last week’s win over Fort William and the Kings were 5-2 winners in their league match in May. A first half Kevin Thain hat-trick on 11, 35 and 45 minutes ensured the visitors led 3-1 at the break with Steven MacLean netting for Beauly after 25 minutes. A late Martin Dallas strike 5 minutes from the end sealed his side’s win. There was a derby at Canal Parks where Kilmallie went down 3-2 to Fort William. The Fort raced into a 3-0 lead through first half goals from Michael Slezas on 4 minutes, Cameron Grant on 10 minutes and Daniel Stewart on his return from injury on 25 minutes. Mark Graham pulled a goal back for Kilmallie a minute before the break. Ross Manson made it 3-2 on 55 minutes but there was no further scoring. Kyles Athletic took a step towards clinching the Marine Harvest South Division 2 title when they drew 4-4 with Tayforth at Tighnabruaich. The match between bottom side Bute and third place Glasgow Mid Argyll in Rothesay was postponed. Things are hotting up in Marine Harvest North Division 3 following Lochaber’s win over Aberdeen University last weekend. Aberdeen University made the long trip west to play bottom side Ardnamurchan and returned home with both points following a 6-1 win. Two former Skye Camanachd players were amongst the Student’s scorers with Kenny MacLeod getting a double and Jamie Beaton also scoring. Elliot Moir, Craig Cameron and Paddy Grace were also on target whilst Ally Nudds found the back of the net for the home side. Lochcarron had an excellent 3-2 win over Lochbroom in Ullapool. Alan Stewart put Lochcarron ahead in the first minute and Kieran Stark made it 2-0 on 34 minutes. James MacRae pulled a goal back for Lochbroom just 4 minutes later and Lorne Hughes made it 2-2 on the hour mark. However Kieran Stark added his second on 70 minutes to give his side an impressive win. The match between second place Lochaber and Strathglass at Spean Bridge was postponed as the visitors were unable to raise a team. |
