The Saturday Shinty Snapshot – 10 July 2010! | |
11 July 2010 Ahead of the weekly Shinty Round Up, the headlines from the shinty matches played on Saturday 10 July 2010 are……….. Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup Newtonmore have gone out of the Scottish Hydro Camanachd against Kyles Athletic at Tighnabruaich for the second consecutive season. Kyles seem to save their best performances for this competition and they beat the league leaders 6-3. Doubles from Roddy MacDonald and Colin McColl and a Tom Whyte strike cancelled out David Cheyne’s brace and a Danny MacRae goal to leave the home side leading 5-3 at the break. Dunkie Kerr netted 20 minutes from the end to seal a 6-3 win and give last season’s runners up a place in the semi finals. Skye Camanachd’s dream of a final appearance 20 years after their only success is over after they lost 5-1 to Inveraray at the Winterton. The Islanders gave a good account of themselves though and Danny Morrison cancelled out a Ewan MacMurdo strike to leave the sides’ level at the break. However Inveraray scored 4 second half goals in an 8 minute burst with Grant Griffin bagging a double, Garry MacPherson scoring a penalty – MacPherson had a first half spot hit saved by Jamie Gannon – and a Russell MacKinlay getting the other. The tie between holders Fort William and Oban Camanachd was a late postponement. The match had been switched to An Aird – a decision which didn’t please the Oban men - as Oban’s Mossfield pitch was unavailable as it had been booked for a football tournament. The tie will now take place at Mossfield next weekend along with the remaining quarter final tie between Glenurquhart and Kingussie at Blairbeg. Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup Glenurquhart are through to their second cup final of the season after they beat Kyles Athletic 2-0 at Blairbeg in the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup. The Glen scored a goal in each half with Ruaraidh Cameron netting 5 minutes from the break and Ewan Brady getting the other from the penalty spot 10 minutes into the second half. Glenurquhart will face the winners of the tie between Lovat and Kingussie which takes place next weekend. Scottish Hydro Premier Division Lovat secured 2 vital points with a 2-1 win over Bute at Balgate. Jamie Matheson put them ahead after 31 minutes and Bute’s chances suffered a further blow when they had Roberto Zavaroni sent off a minute from the break. Jimmy MacKenzie made it 2-0 on 53 minutes and although a Robert Walker penalty 5 minutes from the end gave Bute hope, Lovat held on to take the points. The win leaves Lovat level on points with sixth place Bute. Marine Harvest North Division 1 Kilmallie returned to the scene of their epic Co-operative MacTavish Cup Final against Kingussie and beat Inverness 8-0 at the Bught. Scottish international John Stewart scored a hat-trick as Kilmallie – who were missing 8 players from their first team squad - climb to third place in the table. Second place Beauly missed the chance to go top when they went down 5-1 to Lochaber at Spean Bridge. Ben Delaney scored a double for the second successive Saturday as Michael Delaney’s side go fourth – just behind Kilmallie on goal difference although Kilmallie have a game in hand. The match between Lochcarron and Strathglass at Battery Park was off as the visitors had requested a free weekend as they had several players attending a wedding. The match between league leaders Kinlochshiel and Caberfeidh at Kirkton was also postponed. Marine Harvest South Division 1 A Fraser Inglis inspired Taynuilt beat bottom side Inveraray 8-3 in Fife. The former internationalist scored 4 first half goals as the home side led 7-2 at the break. Glenorchy would have been champions if they had picked up just a point against Lochside Rovers but the game was postponed as was the match between Kilmory and Ballachulish. Marine Harvest North Division 2 Only one match went ahead in Marine Harvest North Division 2 where Skye Camanachd and Fort William shared the points in Portree. Ally MacDonald put Skye ahead on 9 minutes but Josh McGhee made it 1-1 on 39 minutes. MacDonald scored his second on 61 minutes but an Alex Duncan goal 3 minutes from the end gave the side’s a point apiece. Surprise leaders Glengarry will have to wait to add to their points tally as their match against Beauly at Braeview Park was postponed as was the game between third place Newtonmore and sixth place Lovat at the Eilan. Kinlochshiel were awarded the points as Kilmallie couldn’t raise a team for the noon throw up at Kirkton. Marine Harvest South Division 2 Stuart Ferrier scored 4 and Dougie Arnott twice as Tayforth thumped Col Glen 9-0 in Perth. Four goals from Duncan MacNicol gave third place Strachur a 4-2 win over Bute. Duncan Simpson scored twice for the Islanders. Marine Harvest North Division 3 Keith Neville bagged a brace as Lochaber closed the gap on leaders Aberdeen University with a 4-1 win over Lochcarron at Spean Bridge. Lewis Smith was amongst the scorers as Boleskine were 4-1 winners over Inverness in their local derby at Farr. Cammy Fraser opened the scoring as Lochbroom beat Ardnamurchan 3-0 in Ullapool Steven Bellshaw and Lorne Hughes got the others. Strathglass were unable to raise a team for their match against Caberfeidh at Castle Leod so the points went to the home side. |
