2009 Marine Harvest Youth Coach of the Year – Willie Cowie. | |
09 July 2010 Skye Camanachd’s Willie Cowie has been named Marine Harvest Youth Coach of the Year. Cowie has become one of the most influential figures in youth shinty in recent seasons and he started coaching at Portree Primary School over 7 years ago. He initially coached the Primary 1-3 players and he later coached the older Portree Primary School players to MacKay Cup success in 2008 and 2009. Indeed the school embarked on a 2 year unbeaten run in the 12 a side game which included lifting the Tulloch League at the first time of asking and winning a couple of Shinty World Cup titles as well as a clean sweep of local events. The successes continued at U14 level in 2009 where Cowie led the Skye Camanachd U14 side to retaining their U14 North Division 1 title and the young Islanders were also runners up in both the MacMaster and Development Cup Finals in Oban. He has strong shinty principals likes his teams to show a free-flowing style of play and he is also a strong advocate of fair play. |
