Skye Camanachd 5 Kinlochshiel 2. | |
27 June 2010 Skye Camanachd won 2 valuable points with a 5-2 Marine Harvest North Division 2 derby win over Kinlochshiel at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 26 June 2010. Skye Camanachd second team manager Davie MacVicar was unavailable so Alasdair Bruce and Willie MacRae stepped in to look after the side. There were 7 changes to the squad which lost to Kyles Athletic the previous week. Danny Morrison, Iain Morrison and Allan MacKinnon joined Aonghas MacDonald in a revamped Skye attack. Iain Grant and Shaun Hedley returned in defence and Neil MacVicar came into the midfield. Captain David Grant, along with MacVicar, was unavailable and Magnus Burd was injured. Scott MacLeod, Ally MacLeod and Angie MacDonald dropped out of the squad. Kinlochshiel were at full strength and started with David Falconer and Duncan “DA” MacRae in attack and Duncan “Ach” MacRae in midfield. Skye played with a stiff breeze at their backs in the first half and they started brightly. The home centre line took a grip of the game and after 4 minutes, Neil MacVicar won possession in midfield and played the ball forward to Iain Morrison and Aonghas MacDonald fired just over the bar from Morrison’s knock on. Skye keeper Michael Nicolson had to look lively a couple of minutes later when he stopped a Duncan “DA” MacRae shot with his feet and cleared the danger. Allan MacKinnon hit the outside of the Shiel post on 7 minutes but visiting keeper Iain Cameron did seem to have the shot covered. Skye took the lead on 8 minutes. Captain for the day Martin Bruce and Darryl MacIntosh battled hard to win possession in the middle of the park and MacIntosh sent a great ball deep into the heart of the Shiel defence. Aonghas MacDonald won possession and played the ball left to Allan MacKinnon and Danny Morrison expertly first-timed his cross past Cameron to score the vital opening goal. Danny Morrison latched onto a Stewart Grant free hit after 10 minutes but his shot rose just over the bar. Aonghas MacDonald hit the side-netting a minute later following a swift Islanders attack after Neil MacVicar had played forward a Michael Nicolson goal-hit. Skye doubled their advantage on 18 minutes when Neil MacVicar blasted the ball on goalwards. Cameron saved but Iain Morrison nipped in to collect the rebound, turn his marker and tuck the ball into the back of the net. The Skye centre line had a strong grip of the game and it was no surprise when the home side went 3-0 up on the half hour mark. The forward line combined superbly as passing between Danny Morrison, Aonghas MacDonald and Allan MacKinnon led to a scramble in the Shiel defence. The ball broke to Iain Morrison and he took a delightful touch to make space for himself before crashing the ball high into the net. Shiel came back into the game in the closing minutes of the first half. They forced several corners before being awarded a penalty by referee Deek Cameron for a kick inside the D. Duncan “DA” MacRae’s spot hit nestled just inside Nicolson’s right hand post to make it 3-1. The last chance of the first half fell to Skye. Aonghas MacDonald was fouled and took the free-hit himself. He played in Allan MacKinnon but Iain Cameron saved his shot and cleared for a corner. The second half opened with each side launching attacks. Skye almost increased their advantage on 48 minutes when Aonghas MacDonald was inches away from knocking the ball over the line but as Shiel counter-attacked; Michael Morrison beat his marker on the right and fired the ball across Skye keeper Nicolson into the far corner of the net to make it 3-2. The next goal was going to be vital and it was Skye who regained their 2 goal cushion on 54 minutes when Aonghas MacDonald found space on the right and sent a tantalising cross in to the D. Alan MacKinnon rose to meet MacDonald’s cross and the ball was deflected into the net with the final touch perhaps coming off a Shiel defender. Iain Morrison made a great run on 56 minutes and when his cross was deflected into the air, Aonghas MacDonald reacted first to shy the ball into the net and make it 5-2. Shiel forward David Falconer required treatment on 69 minutes when a Martin Bruce challenge accidently caught him on the knee. Shiel’s Duncan “DA” MacRae shot just past the post on 71 minutes from a corner. Shiel moved Colin Fraser into attack with David Falconer going to full back. Skye replaced Aonghas MacDonald with Ally MacDonald on 75 minutes. MacDonald had made a major contribution to the Skye attack and he enjoyed a full blooded tussle with Shiel veteran and player / manager Colin Fraser. Two more home substitutions quickly followed as attackers Danny Morrison and Iain Morrison were replaced by Malcolm Moir and Jordan Murchison. Both sides had chances before the final whistle but there was no further scoring and Skye ran out 5-2 winners. The Skye victory coupled with Beauly’s defeat at Glengarry takes the Islanders off the bottom of the table and if they can win their games in hand, they should climb to mid-table. There were no failures in the Skye line-up and Darryl MacIntosh deserves special mention for a terrific performance at full centre. Shiel never gave up and there performances this season have showed that they are worthy of their mid table league position.
