Lewis Camanachd Win North Coast Shinty Sixes. | |
08 June 2010 Lewis B won the North Coast Shinty Sixes in Scourie on Saturday 5 June 2010. The Lewis B side was managed by Skye Camanachd's Eoghan Stewart and they won 3 of their 4 matches with the other match drawn. Prominent in the Lewis B success were Scott Murray, who turned in a player of the tournament performance, and 15 year old James "Titch" Morrison, who scored all 5 goals Lewis goals. The sides went through the competition unbeaten and without conceding a goal. This element of the tournament win was particularly satisfying for fullback Daniel "Gaga" Gallagher and captain & goalkeeper Conor MacDonald after their traumatic experiences against the Skye Camanachd second team in the Strathdearn Cup in early May 2010. Eoghan Stewart also played fullback for the Lewis A team which consisted of more inexperienced, younger players but proved stern opposition for 2008 winners Kinlochbervie and 2009 winners Farr A. Stewart had this to say about the long awaited success, "It was good to see that the senior players have made progress and gained from our games against mainland teams in the Camanachd Association cup competitions. It is always hard to gauge your progress when you come up against highly-superior league opposition. Farr and Kinlochbervie were more our level and they were very dangerous opponents but I felt we played really well all day to win the cup. Players such as Daniel "Gaga" Gallagher and Scott Murray really showed their class and hopefully this win will give them confidence. None of the youngsters looked out of place and the hard work of John Nally and Iain Sinclair at the Nicolson Institute is coming to fruition. This is absolutely the highlight of the past four years with Lewis Camanachd although it wasn't the highlight of my day - that was seeing Skye Camanachd second team player / manager Davie MacVicar playing for the Rest of the World Over-40s select at the opening of Caberfeidh's new clubhouse! I am also delighted that both Skye Camanachd teams got back to their winning ways today." Meantime in the 14 and Under competition, Farr A had to go through a play-off to beat Kinlochbervie A in a thrilling game played out in front of a crowd of around 200 on a glorious sunny day. Heather MacNeil and all at Kinlochbervie Camanachd are to be commended for putting on such a thoroughly enjoyable event. |
