The Shinty Preview – Saturday 29 May 2010. | |
28 May 2010 The MacTavish Cup and Glasgow Celtic Society Cup semi finals take place on Saturday 29 May 2010. There is a local derby at An Aird where Fort William meet Kilmallie in the semi final of the MacTavish Cup. The Fort will still be without James Clark which could mean that Gary Innes continues in attack. Scottish international John Stewart should return from suspension for Kilmallie. This match will be refereed by 2008 Marine Harvest referee of the year Ronnie Campbell and his goal judges are Billy MacLeod, Robert Morrison. Beauly take on 2009 beaten finalists Kingussie at Braeview Park. Innes Simpson could return for Beauly following a broken ankle. The visitors have an injury doubt over Louis Munro but they are getting close to a full squad and they will have Thomas Borthwick and Ryan Borthwick back in their squad after they were left out last weekend for playing a football match 48 hours before Kingussie’s Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup tie at Strathglass. Graham Cameron is the match referee and he will be accompanied by goal judges Brian Davies and Willie Cameron. The Glasgow Celtic Society Cup semi finals see holders Inveraray travel to Mossfield to play Oban Camanachd. This match is a repeat of the 2009 final which Inveraray won 3-2. Once again much will depend on what players Inveraray have available but they could have a strong side for a competition in which they have been dominant in reason season. Inveraray have been in excellent form at home this season but they only beat Oban Camanachd 2-1 at the Winterton last month thanks to first half goals from Ewan MacMurdo and Grant Griffin. Ted McDonald takes charge of this one and his goal judges are Alex MacNaughton and John MacPhail. Bute and Kyles Athletic have a derby meeting at the Meadows. The sides also met last weekend in the Scottish Hydro Electric Camanachd when a late Roddy MacDonald strike took the match to extra time. It eventually took penalties to settle the tie in Kyles favour. The referee is Charles Young and he will be accompanied by goal judges John Crawford and Donnie MacDougall. Skye Camanachd and Kilmallie are already through to the Balliemore Cup semi finals and that latter club will final out their opponents following the meeting between Lochaber and Lochcarron at Spean Bridge. This match has been carried forward from Saturday 15 May 2010 when Lochcarron requested a free Saturday so that their players could cheer on Ross County in the Scottish Cup Final. Lochaber will be without Lachlan Campbell who has a broken finger and they have concerns over Danny Delaney who has a broken toe. This tie has a 12pm throw up. Lovat and Skye Camanachd have a 12 noon throw up in the second round of the Strathdearn Cup. Skye will be without captain David Grant who has a broken finger and Darryl MacIntosh is cup tied having played in an earlier round for Lewis Camanachd. There are also a couple of Bullough Cup first round ties. Marine Harvest South Division 1 side Lochside Rovers will start as favourites against Col Glen from Marine Harvest South Division 2 at Ganavan. Taynuilt from Marine Harvest South Division 1 host Islanders Bute who sit bottom of Marine Harvest South Division 2. There is just one match in the Scottish Hydro Premier Division as Lovat host Newtonmore at Balgate. Norman MacArthur’s troops know that victory will take them back to the top of the table and they start as favourites in this one. Skye Camanachd host Marine Harvest North Division 1 leaders Kinlochshiel in a west coast derby at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Red cards last weekend will deprive the Islanders of defender Jamie MacDonald and Shiel of forward John MacRae. A win for Shiel will put them clear at the top of the league whilst a Skye victory will take them within a point of the visitors with 4 games in hand so there is plenty at stake. Strathglass will look to kick-start their season when they play Inverness at Cannich. The sides currently occupy the bottom two places in the league so this is a classic 4 pointer. Marine Harvest South Division 1 leaders Glenorchy travel to play bottom club Inveraray at the Winterton. Glenorchy have won all 5 of their league matches this season whilst Inveraray have yet to pick up a point. The matches between Ballachulish and Kilmory are normally tasty affairs and they will likely serve up another cracker at Jubilee Park. Marine Harvest North Division 2 leaders Fort William travel to the Eilan to play Newtonmore. Daniel Stewart has been prolific in front of goal this season and he will be a major threat once again. The Fort were 6-3 winners when the sides played at An Aird in March 2010. However they had the advantage of having John MacDonald in their line-up that day. The match between third place Glengarry and second place Glenurquhart at Invergarry will be another close affair. Kingussie play Kinlochshiel at the Dell. The Kingussie reserves have some experienced players available for selection at the moment and they will be formidable opponents. However Kinlochshiel enjoyed an extra time Strathdearn Cup victory over their opponents at Kirkton earlier in the season. Kilmallie and Beauly meet at Canal Parks. This match throws up at the earlier time of 11am. Marine Harvest South Division 2 runaway leaders Kyles Athletic welcome fourth place Aberdour to Tighnabruaich. Second top Glasgow Mid Argyll and second bottom Strachur meet at Yoker. Lochaber lead Marine Harvest North Division 3 and they will be favourites to stay there following their meeting with Inverness at Spean Bridge. Lochaber had a resounding 8-0 win when the sides met at the Bught Park in March. Lochbroom make the long journey east to play Aberdeen University. Lochbroom have been in good form recently but this match will test them. Caberfeidh and Boleskine meet for the second consecutive Saturday. They drew 1-1 at Farr last weekend and this game takes place at Castle Leod. There is a 12 noon throw up for the game between Strathglass and Ardnamurchan at Cannich. The sides occupy the bottom two places in the league with Strathglass having a point advantage. The match opens a feast of shinty at Cannich with no less than 3 matches taking place throughout the day and evening. Next up is the Strathglass first team who take on Inverness and then Strathglass will play army shinty side The SCOTS at 7pm in a memorial to former player Scott Bain who died last year. |
