The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 1 May 2010. | |
04 May 2010 MacTavish Cup holders Newtonmore have been knocked out of the competition at the quarter final stage whilst Glasgow Celtic Society Cup winners Inveraray have breezed through to the semi finals following the ties on Saturday 1 May 2010.
A Ronald Ross inspired Kingussie came out on top against Newtonmore in the first Badenoch derby of the season in the MacTavish Cup at the Eilan. It took extra time to separate the sides in what was a repeat of the 2009 final. Newtonmore suffered a blow ahead of this clash with 18 year old defender Andy MacKintosh missing out with a broken thumb. Kingussie were without influential defender Ally MacLeod. Kings manager Stevie Borthwick stuck with his young players for this clash with only the veteran Rory Fraser called up to play in defence. Newtonmore struck first when David Cheyne netted after 10 minutes and things looked beak for the Kings when they lost defender Ian Borthwick after 10 minutes when his injury problems struck again. There was no further scoring in the first half and that was mainly down to an excellent display from ‘More keeper Michael Ritchie. However Kingussie did draw level on 50 minutes through a Ronald Ross strike but they only remained on level terms for 3 minutes as Evan Menzies restored ‘More’s lead. When Cheyne added his second on 70 minutes, the holders looked to have one foot in the next round. Kingussie pulled a goal back just 3 minutes later through Ross to set up a dramatic finish. And dramatic it was as Ronald Ross beat Ritchie in the last minute to complete his hat-trick and take the tie into extra time. Kingussie took the lead for the first time in the match just 4 minutes into the extra time period and it was Ronald Ross again who did the damage to score his and Kingussie’s fourth goal and take his side through to the next round. Newtonmore lost forward Danny MacRae during extra time with a suspected broken thumb. As well as Ross, Fraser Munro at wing centre was excellent for the victors.
There was another local derby at Canal Parks where Kilmallie hosted Lochaber. A close battle was anticipated and few expected the home side to run away with a 5-0 victory. John Stewart gave Kilmallie the lead after 13 minutes and Liam MacDonald added a second 2 minutes later. John Stewart scored a gain 3 minutes before the break to give the home side a 3-0 interval lead. Liam MacDonald scored his second a minute into the second half and he went on to complete his hat-trick a minute from the end. Kilmallie’s Michael Rodger and Lochaber's Danny Delaney were both sent off by referee Charles young after they got involved in a scuffle.
Caberfeidh’s faltering form in recent games continued when they lost 4-2 to Beauly at Braeview Park. Kevin Bartlett and Ally MacLennan scored for the visitors but Jamie MacLennan was the Beauly hero with a hat-trick. This, coupled with a David MacLean strike, gave Beauly, who were minus broken ankle victim Innes Simpson, an impressive win.
Skye Camanachd lost 5-0 to Camanachd Cup holders Fort William at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree Skye welcomed captain Steven Morrison back into the side. However they were without the talents of defender Jamie MacDonald who had a university exam in Glasgow on the day of the game and defender John Moira and forward Ally MacLennan. The visitors, with the wind at their backs, almost got off to a dream start when they broke down the Skye right after just 2 minutes. Victor Smith and Steven Morrison jostled for possession and when the Skye player’s caman slipped from his grasp, it left Smith clean through on goal. However as Jamie Gannon rushed from his line, the Fort veteran could only shoot into the side net. Skye responded with a series of attacks which included Fort keeper Paul MacKay saving with his foot from Allan MacKinnon and Gilleasbuig MacDonald shot wide of target. Fort William danger man James Clark broke down the right on 11 minutes but good tackling from Iain Nicolson forced him to shoot wide. Skye keeper Jamie Gannon did well to palm clear a 25 yard looping Bryan Simpson effort after 12 minutes but the visitors took the lead a minute later. Referee John MacPhee awarded a soft free hit to Fort William 20 yards from the Skye goal and as the ball was rolled to James Clark, he sent a blistering drive which gave Gannon no chance. Paul MacKay brilliantly tipped a 30 yard scorcher from Somhairle MacDonald over the bar a minute later. Fort William should have gone 2-0 up after 15 minutes when a ball across goal from the right found Victor Smith in space at the back post. However he failed to hit the target when it looked easier to score. A long ball forward from Duncan Rodger on 18 minutes found Bryan Simpson and he punished the Skye defence for standing off him by crashing the ball into the net. Skye might have been two down but they continued to press the Fort William goal. Dougie Rankin played in Allan MacKinnon after 21 minutes but his effort on goal was well saved by MacKay with his foot. Dougie Rankin shot wide from the resultant corner. Gilleasbuig MacDonald shot wide of target from a corner after 36 minutes and 3 minutes later a Skye move which started from an AB Connor clearance, ended when MacKay saved with his feet from a Somhairle MacDonald shot. Skye were awarded a free hit 20 yards from the Fort goal just 6 minutes from the break for a foul on Allan MacKinnon which left him with a cut head. The ball was slipped to Dougie Rankin but he failed to find the target. Ruthless Fort William punished Skye for these missed chances 4 minutes before the break. James Clark fired in a low corner from the left which was missed by the Skye defence and Gordie MacKinnon ran in to make the half time score 3-0 to the visitors. Skye started the second half on the offensive and MacKay again saved well with his feet from Somhairle MacDonald after 47 minutes. However the home side went further behind on 49 minutes. A shy from the right from the impressive Gary Innes lobbed into the danger are and Bryan Simpson swept the ball into the net to make it 4-0. Alan Palmer replaced AB Connor for Skye with Shockie MacLennan dropping into defence. Neil MacVicar replaced Iain Nicolson who was suffering with a tight hamstring and Danny Morrison came on for Allan MacKinnon in attack. Fort William enjoyed the bulk of the pressure for the remainder of the game but they only had one further goal to show for their efforts thanks to some determined defending by Steven Morrison and Iain Nicolson and a couple of fine stops from Jamie Gannon. The final goal came in the 84 minute when Duncan Rodger was allowed to burst through the Skye defence to make it 5-0.

Holders Inveraray did an Oban double when they ran riot against Oban Celtic at the Winterton a week after beating Oban Camanachd. Garry MacPherson gave Inveraray the lead after 10 minutes and the same player made it 2-0 when referee Ted MacDonald awarded them a penalty on 23 minutes. Russell MacKinlay made it 3-0 on 27 minutes and he added another 10 minutes after the break. Neil Campbell made it 4-0 on 62 minutes and the Russell MacKinlay capped a sparkling afternoon by scoring 4 further goals in a 16 minute spell. This gave him a double hat-trick and his strikes after 68, 75, 81 and 83 minutes gave Inveraray a convincing 9-0 victory.

Kyles Athletic and Glenorchy met at Tighnabruaich. The visitors have made a good start to their Marine Harvest South Division 1 campaign but they fell behind to a Dunkie Kerr effort after 15 minutes. A double from Grant Irvine on 25 and 35 minutes sealed a 3-0 victory for the home side.
The Glasgow Celtic Society Cup semi finals on Saturday 29 May 2010 bring together 4 Scottish Hydro Premier Division sides. Holders Inveraray meet Oban Camanachd whilst Bute play Kyles Athletic. The Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final is on Saturday 26 June 2010.
Strathdearn Cup ties are normally played midweek but travel distances have lead to three ties being brought forward to this weekend.
There was an historic first meeting between Island sides Skye Camanachd and Lewis Camanachd at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Skye have struggled in the league this season but they used this game to get back to their winning ways. Manager Davie MacVicar had practically a full squad to choose from for the first time this season. The only absentees were defenders Neil John Campbell who was injured and Andrew Banks who had a university exam on Saturday. Lewis were without Kenny Mould, Ally Murray and Ally Lamont. Skye, sporting their new strips provided by wind farm company Vattenfall, made a presentation to their visitors before the game to mark the historic first meeting of these Island clubs. Skye captain David Grant presented his Lewis counter-part Paul Duke with an inscribed plaque. Skye stated their intent from the start when Jordan Murchison flicked the ball in the air and smashed a volley off the frame of the visitor’s goal. The Islanders took the lead on 9 minutes when a Neil MacVicar shot was saved but Conor MacDonald but the rebound fell kindly for Stewart Grant who knocked the ball into the back of the net. Skye doubled their advantage a minute later when Iain Morrison played the ball goalwards and Angie MacDonald tucked the ball into the net. A sweeping move on 12 minutes ended when Jordan Murchison lofted the ball high into the net. All four Skye forwards combined to make it 4-0. Jordan Murchison played the ball down the left to Danny Morrison and he played in Angie MacDonald who crossed for the onrushing Iain Morrison to shoot past MacDonald. Neil MacVicar found Danny Morrison on the Skye right with a short free hit on 22 minutes and Morrison made no mistake as he bulleted the ball into the net. However Conor MacDonald denied Danny Morrison his second with a fine save a minute later. Skye went 6-0 ahead moments later when Iain Morrison released Neil MacVicar and he set up Angie MacDonald to score his second. Conor MacDonald saved from Iain Morrison on 32 minutes but Angie MacDonald lifted the rebound into the net to complete his hat-trick. MacDonald was on target again a minute later when he finished off a move involving Scott Martin and Neil MacVicar. Danny Morrison completed the first half scoring when he found space to fire home to make it 9-0. Skye made it double figures on 52 minutes when Angie MacDonald scored a great individual goal. He turned and beat his marker, slipped the ball past another defender before rifling a shot which gave keeper MacDonald no chance. This was MacDonald’s fifth goal of the game and his final contributed as he was replaced by Ally MacDonald. Ally MacDonald made an instant contribution as he combined with Jordan Murchison to set up Danny Morrison to complete his hat-trick. Jordan Murchison made it 12-0 on 66 minutes when he got on the end of a corner from the right to score his second. Lewis full back Daniel Gallagher had enjoyed a good tussle with Angie MacDonald and he was afforded no respite by MacDonald’s replacement Ally MacDonald who ran across goal to score high into the net a couple of minutes later. A robust challenge from Skye’s Martin Bruce pole-axed Lewis forward Eoghan Stewart. The Skye based Gaelic teacher was left requiring treatment whilst Bruce received a ticking off from referee John MacLeod. Ally MacLeod had come on in place of Jordan Murchison and he shot goalwards on 75 minutes for Ally MacDonald to knock the ball over the line to make it 14-0. A couple of minutes later Ally MacLeod saw his shot saved by Conor MacDonald but Ally MacDonald supplied the deftest of touches to knock the rebound over the line for his hat-trick. Ally MacDonald scored his fourth on 79 minutes and incredibly, Ally MacLeod was the supplier again. Ally MacLeod got the goal his endeavour deserved on 81 minutes when he confidently crashed the ball into the net to score his first goal for the second team and take Skye’s tally to 17. Ally MacLeod completed the scoring on 83 minutes when he fired a ball across goal high into the Lewis net, giving Conor MacDonald no chance. Lewis may have been well beaten but they were not despondent and there is much to admire about the enthusiasm shown by this fledgling club. Skye will have gained confidence from their first win of the season and they now face Lovat in the Strathdearn Cup second round later in the month.
It took extra time to separate Kinlochshiel and Kingussie at Kirkton. Steven Isles put the home side ahead after 12 minutes but Martin Dallas levelled after 33 minutes. There was no further scoring so the match went into an extra time period. Shiel looked to be safely through to the next round when Ross Fraser bagged a hat-trick after 93, 103 and 117 minutes to put them 4-1 up. However referee John Sloggie awarded the visitors a penalty 2 minutes from the end which Rory Borthwick converted. Kingussie’s Martin Dallas scored his second a minute later to set up a tense final minute but Shiel held on for an impressive victory.
There was an exciting tie at Spean Bridge between Marine Harvest North Division 3 title hopefuls Lochaber and Aberdeen University. The sides currently occupy the top two positions in the league and they are both the division’s top scorers so it was no surprise that they served up a 7 goal thriller. Pat Toal scored the only goal of the first half on 43 minutes to give Lochaber the edge at the break. Willie Hunter equalised for the Students 5 minutes after the break but Stuart Callison restored Lochaber’s lead on 56 minutes. Aberdeen levelled again 2 minutes later through former Skye Camanachd player Jamie Beaton. Craig Matheson put the home side 3-2 up on 70 minutes but Jamie Beaton leveled again within a couple of minutes. Lochaber’s Craig Matheson had the final say when he scored his second on 83 minutes to give Lochaber a 4-3 lead and this time the Students were unable to respond.
There was one match in the Scottish Hydro Premier Division and there was a share of the points in the derby between Glenurquhart and Lovat at Blairbeg. Both sides have struggled in recent weeks so a draw was probably no surprise. After a goalless first half, Eddie Tembo gave Glenurquhart a 69 minute lead. However Lovat’s James MacPherson continued his good start to the season when he leveled a couple of minutes later. The point gained by each side means that Oban Camanachd drop into the second bottom spot in the table.
Kinlochshiel continued their recent Marine Harvest North Division 1 revival when they beat Inverness 2-1 at the Bught Park. However they had to fight all the way for the points against a stuffy Inverness side. Finlay MacRae gave the visitors the lead with a 9 minute strike. However Fraser Heath made it 1-1 just 2 minutes into the second half. The match looked to be heading for a draw until Keith MacRae scored the winner 5 minutes from the end.

Beauly were victors by the odd goal in seven in their reserve derby against Lovat at Balgate. Goals from Darren Hexley after 22 minutes and Jimmy MacKenzie after 34 minutes gave Lovat a 2-0 interval lead. A Scott MacLean double after 50 and 65 minutes made it 2-2 and Beauly’s Jack MacDonald put the visitors ahead on 71 minutes. Jamie Matheson made it 3-3 on 80 minutes but Jack MacDonald scored what proved to be the winner when he made it 4-3 for Beauly just 2 minutes later.

Col Glen recovered from last week’s 8-0 defeat to Aberdour with a 4-1 home win over bottom side Bute. Goals from Preston Shuttleworth twice, Peter Shuttleworth and veteran Ronnie MacVicar set them on their way whilst Duncan Simpson replied for the visitors.
A last minute goal from Raymond Fraser gave Strathglass a draw with Caberfeidh at Cannich in Marine Harvest North Division 3. Allan Ross had given Cabers a 35 minute lead. The point takes Strathglass off bottom spot in the league.
Lochcarron had a convincing 7-1 win at Ardnamurchan. Kieran Murray, four from Crisdean Finlayson, Malcolm Stuart and David MacCuish were their scorers whilst James Strachan replied for the home side. The defeat leaves Ardnamurchan bottom of the league.
Lochbroom made it 4 league wins in a row when they beat Boleskine in Ullapool. The home side has had to do without the injured Jamie Stewart in recent weeks but they took the lead through Aaron Matheson after 26 minutes and Steven Bellshaw added a second on 57 minutes. Lewis Smith scored a last minute goal for Boleskine but the home side held on to take the points. |
