Skye Camanachd U17 3 Fort William U17 1. | |
27 April 2010 Skye Camanachd U17s beat their Fort William counter-parts in the first round of the MacTavish Juvenile Cup at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Tuesday 27 April 2010.
Skye started well with the wind at their backs and Chris MacLennan on the right of the attack was causing all sorts of problems for the visitor’s defence.
Magnus Burd gave Skye the lead after 16 minutes when he prodded the ball past Jack Fraser in the Fort William goal.
Skye defender Shaun Hedley received a blow to the chin and had to receive medical attention and several stitches at the local hospital. However he showed great courage by returning to the field in the second half, taking advantage of the rolling substitution rule.
Skye passed up several chances to score a second and they had keeper Iain MacLeod to thank for two terrific saves to keep them ahead.
However when the ball fell to John Gillies 5 minutes before the interval, the youngster made no mistake as he lifted the ball into the net.
Fort William played with the wind in the second half and they started strongly.
Iain MacLeod saved an awkward 40 yard lob which bounced in front of him in the opening minute.
The Fort youngsters pulled a goal back 5 minutes later when Mark Fraser scored from a corner on the right. Skye keeper MacLeod got his stick to the ball but the power of the shot beat him.
As Fort William pressed for an equaliser, they found the Skye defence of Iain Grant, Calum Gibb, Mark Mortimer (who was replaced by the returning Shaun Hedley) and Scott MacLeod to be in no mood to let them pass.
The game started to get tousy and referee Donnie Martin was forced to book 3 Fort William players – Jamie Cruickshank, Cal Brown and Ryan Murphy – for reckless play.
Skye regained the initiative with full centre Martin Bruce along with wing centres Ally MacLeod and Daniel Morrison controlling the centre line.
Skye buckshee forward Jordan Murchison was a constant threat and he had a good battle with Fort William’s buckshee back Jamie Cruickshank.
As Skye pressed to finish the tie, the ball fell to full forward Magnus Burd, who had a great game throughout, and he tucked the ball into the net to put Skye through to the next round.
This was a very good all round team performance from a Skye side which battled hard and showed plenty of skill to earn their place in the second round.
