24 February 2010 Portree Primary School Panthers won the Isle of Skye Primary Schools Camanachd Association First Shinty Tournament for Primary 5 & under at the Fingal Centre, Portree on Tuesday 23 February 2010.
A total of 8 teams from all over Skye took part in the competition. There were 2 teams from Portree Primary School (Panthers and Tigers), 3 sides from South Skye and teams from Bracadale, Dunvegan and Elgol .
Portree Panthers won League A and Elgol came runners up.
South End A topped League B with Portree Tigers runners up.
Portree Panthers beat Portree Tigers in the first semi final to secure a place in the final.
South End A and a terrific young Elgol team fought out a nail-biting semi final with South End A squeezing past despite Elgol levelling the match on no fewer than 3 occasions
The final was well contested with Portree Panthers showing early determination and South End A goalkeeper Fin MacPherson in great form. Panthers continued to threaten and it was no surprise to see Ryan MacAskill open the scoring with a well worked move involving Ross Nicolson and Stewart Taylor.
Panthers went further ahead with goals from Martin Pringle and another MacAskill strike.
South End A’s captain and promising youngster Ruairidh MacLeod tried to lead a fight back and his pass found Calum Harper in space to make the score 3-1, before Panthers Ryan MacAskill completed his hat trick to make half time score 4-1
Chances went for either side in the second half before the ever dangerous Martin MacRae found the net for South End A to make the score 4-2. Despite further chances this was to be the final score
Portree have now added the Primary 5 & Under Trophy to the Primary 7 & Under trophy they won last week.
Connor Gilpin of Panthers was the most assured player of the evening alongside the predatory instincts of Ryan MacAskill. South End was well served by Ruairidh MacLeod and Martin MacRae. Portree Tigers Bailey Hallas, Bracadale duo James Morrison and Jamie MacPhie alongside Finn Davidson and Duncan Watt from Elgol and Deno Margelis and Alexander Leitch from Dunvegan all showed up well on an evening where good sportsmanship was displayed throughout the event.
Both Portree Panthers and South End A now go through to the P 5 & Under National First Shinty Finals in Inverness on 20 March 2010.
