North Skye Lift 2010 Ewen Morrison Memorial Cup. | |
06 February 2010 North Skye won the Ewen Morrison Memorial Cup with a 4-2 win over South Skye at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 6 February 2010.
The first half was an even affair with both defences on top in this entertaining and competitive match.
The North back line looked particularly good with David Grant, Martin Bruce, Allan MacLeod and Jamie MacDonald keeping the experienced South forward line of Somhairle MacDonald, Danny Morrison, Ally MacLennan and Dougie Rankin at bay.
The South suffered a blow when buckshee back Shocky MacLennan had to come off with a muscle injury in his leg. Fellow defender John Moir also picked up a knock on the foot and also had to be withdrawn. However they were well served by full back Steven Morrison who made several telling clearances during the first period.
Whenever the South did breach their opponent’s defence they found North keeper Ian Munro in confident form and he had one brilliant save above his head from a Somhairle MacDonald piledriver.
The only goal of the first half came when South keeper Scott MacLeod blocked a shot with his legs but the ball fell for North forward Ian Morrison who scooped the rebound into the net.
Somhairle MacDonald had the ball in the net for the South but his strike was ruled out for offside by referee John Angus Gillies.
There was an enthralling battle in the middle of the park between first team midfielders Kenny Campbell for the North and Gilleasbuig MacDonald for the South with Campbell coming out on top.
The South introduced first team manager Aonghas MacDonald at full forward and North full back David Grant had to look lively to stop him finding the space to shoot at goal.
Jordan Murchison had a goal ruled out for offside in the second half on the advice of goal judge Donnie Martin.
The second period saw the forwards on both sides create more chances and the North centre line of Campbell and wing centres Scott Martin and Neil MacVicar really took a grip of the game.
On 73 minutes, the North’s Jordan Murchison ran in from the left and found Alan Palmer, who was excellent throughout, and he gave Scott Macleod no chance as he crashed the ball into the top corner of the net.
Just a couple of minutes later, their seemed little danger when North forward Eoghan Stewart collected the ball on the right wing until he suddenly unleashed a blistering drive into the roof of the net to make it 3-0.
The South did not take this lying down and you could sense their determination to get back into the game when Somhairle MacDonald blasted the ball into the net from a corner on the right after 84 minutes.
Just 3 minutes later it was 3-2 when Iain Nicolson, who had been pushed forward into attack, played in Aonghas MacDonald and he found enough space to turn and fire the ball into the net.
However there was to be no leveller as the North’s Allan MacKinnon put the result beyond doubt when he knocked the ball over the line to make it 4-2 and wrestle the trophy back North.
The Ewen Morrison Memorial Cup was presented to North captain Kenny Campbell by the late Ewen Morrison’s niece Chrisanne MacDonald and his son Alasdair Morrison.
