27 January 2010 31 May 1997 - London Shield Final
Skye Camanachd U17 2 Inveraray U17 1
MacTavish Juvenile Cup winners Skye Camanachd U17 lifted the London Shield for the first time since the competition started with a hard fought 2-1 win over MacQuiston Cup winners Inveraray at An Aird. Inveraray were looking to win the competition for the second time as they won the inaugural London Shield.
Skye played with the wind at their backs in the first half and they took the lead after only 18 minutes. Inveraray keeper McMurdo did well to stop a Ruairidh MacLeod piledriver but Somhairle MacDonald was in the right place at the right time to first time the rebound into the roof of the net.
Inveraray came back into the match and they levelled before the break through John MacKenzie to make the final all square at the interval.
Inveraray continued to pressure Skye from the start of the second half and Skye keeper Kenny Campbell – who was still eligible to play for the Skye Camanachd U14 side – made a couple of terrific stops.
Skye regained the lead midway though the second half when Somhairle MacDonald bagged his second goal of the game. There seemed little danger when MacDonald beat his man 20 yards from goal but he unleashed an unstoppable 20 yard drive which flew into the roof of the net. It was a goal fit to win any competition.
This goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of Inveraray and the Skye youngsters safely saw out the rest of the game.
Camanachd Association President Duncan Cameron presented the London Shield to a delighted Skye Camanachd captain Allan MacLeod.
With the MacTavish Juvenile Cup and London Shield in the bag, Skye Camanachd U17 coach Donnie Martin and his players now had the WJ Cameron Final against Kilmallie to look forward to as they went out to secure a clean sweep of youth trophies.
The basis of Skye’s win was undoubtedly their strong defence with keeper Kenny Campbell and defenders Stuart Campbell, Ben Wear, Keith MacKenzie and Calum Simmister all in quite brilliant form.
