Memory Lane - Skye Youngsters Sweep The Boards – Part 1. | |
22 January 2010 Saturday 30 March 1997 - MacTavish Juvenile Cup Semi Final. Skye Camanachd U17 14 Fort William U17 0. In this short series of Memory Lane, we’ll look at the 1997 youth shinty season when the Skye Camanachd Juvenile team swept the boards and completed an U17 shinty grand slam. Skye Camanachd U17 won through to the MacTavish Juvenile Cup Final when they trounced Fort William 14-0 in their semi final at Invergarry. Some of the Skye Camanachd players had played for the club’s U14 side who had narrowly lost to Oban Camanachd in the MacMaster Cup Final in the morning. However they didn’t let that disappointment affect them as they raced to take part in this match. Skye put the tie out of sight in the first half. Steven Morrison (Uig) was in prolific form in front of goal as he helped himself to 5 goals during the first period. U17 coach Donnie Martin withdrew Morrison from the forward line for the second period to prevent the goal scoring getting really out of hand. Jamie Beaton scored twice and Somhairle MacDonald netted the other to give Skye an unassailable 8-0 half time advantage. U14 forward Kenny Campbell, who normally plays in goal for the U17 side, scored a second half hat-trick for the young Islanders and Jamie Beaton went on to complete his hat-trick too. There was also a rare move into the forward line for buckshee back Jamie Nicolson and full centre Allan MacLeod and they both made the most of the opportunity with a goal a piece to complete a 14-0 rout. Kilmallie beat Kingussie in the other semi final. This was a much closer affair with Kilmallie eventually running out 4-3 winners in what was a very exciting match. |
