04 January 2010 The Macaulay Cup Saturday 21 February 1987 – Macaulay Cup Second Round – Skye Camanachd 2 There was a dramatic afternoon’s shinty at the King George V Park, Portree as Skye Camanachd threw away a 2 goal lead against Skye Camanachd player / manager Calum Murchison made changes to his side and started with Dugald “Horace” Ross, Duncan MacDougall and Willie MacRae in the centre line and all 3 put in inspired performances. The match started at a frantic pace and Skye’s Willie MacKinnon shot over after 2 minutes with just keeper Graeme MacMillan to beat. The tie was a real end to end affair and Peter Gordon shot just wide for Skye as the sides battled for the vital opening goal. Graeme MacMillan saved well from Dugald “Horace” Ross and Willie MacKinnon was just unable to get to the rebound. On 30 minutes, Skye were awarded a free hit 35 yards from goal. Full centre Duncan MacDougall spotted Dugald “Horace” Ross streaking into space and his perfectly delivered ball allowed Ross the chance to smash the ball into the back of the net before the Skye took a 2-0 lead into the half time break when wing forward Andy MacLean took advantage of a goal mouth scramble to beat MacMillan in the Fort William goal. After starting the match so well, the Islanders will have been disappointed to lose a soft goal at the start of the second half when their defence seemed to go to sleep, allowing Deek Cameron to shoot into the net. Skye’s Dugald “Horace” Ross had the ball in the net on the hour mark but his effort was disallowed for offside. Skye had an incredible let-off when one Skye suffered a blow when the industrious John “Slippy” Finlayson had to come off with a hand injury and he was replaced by John Angus Gillies. Gilles came in to the centre line with Duncan MacDougall replacing Finlayson at wing back. Skye continued to enjoy the bulk of the pressure but Just when Skye looked to have the tie won, it was from one such break-away in the dying seconds that There was time for one last Skye attack before the end but the This was an enjoyable cup tie for the Portree crowd and the midfield battle between Skye’s Duncan MacDougall and Skye Camanachd player / manager Calum Murchison was pleased with his side’s display but he must have realised that his team may well have passed up a great opportunity to progress in the tournament. |
