Memory Lane – Season 1986 / 87 – Part 28. | |
16 December 2009 Saturday 18 April 1987 - North Division 1 – Skye Camanachd 4 Newtonmore 4 This was a huge improvement on Skye’s performance against Newtonmore earlier in the season when they were crushed 9-0. The game at Lochcarron saw the Islanders turn in a battling, gutsy performance and they showed real determination to earn a point after trailing 4-2 at one stage. The early pressure came from Newtonmore and it was not surprise when they took the lead through Allan MacKintosh midway through the first half. Skye equalised within a minute though when a Duncan MacDougall effort which flew past Hugh Chisholm in the Newtonmore goal. Ken MacKintosh restored Newtonmore’s lead as the game continued to swing from end to end. Skye equalised for the second time when good inter-play between Calum Murchison and Duncan MacDougall set up a chance for MacDougall and he fired a glorious drive into the back of the net. It was Newtonmore who took a single goal advantage into the half time period though when George Fraser sent a trademark rocket shot into the net to make it 3-2. Newtonmore took a 2 goal lead for the first time in the game when Allan MacKintosh notched his second goal on 54 minutes. Skye could easily have crumbled at this point but MacKintosh’s goal seemed to fire-up the Islanders and they went on to enjoy the bulk of the play for the remainder of the game. The Skye centre line really took a grip of the game with wing centre Dugald “Horace” Ross particularly impressive. Caley MacLean also dominated his full centre dual with Hamish Robertson and if Skye had taken all the chances they’d created, they could have gone on to win the game quite comfortably. Willie MacKinnon was another who was turning in a great performance for Skye as he gave ‘More’s Dave “Tarzan” Ritchie a torrid time. A good move involving Willie MacKinnon, Duncan MacDougall and Calum Murchison gave the latter a chance but he shot over the bar with just the keeper to beat. Andrew “Shorty” Murchison had an even better chance just a moment later but he shot wide of the target with just Chisholm to beat. With only 15 minutes remaining, Skye finally turned their pressure into a goal. Dugald “Horace“ Ross played a superb 40 yard pass to Calum Murchison and the player / manager smashed the ball past Chisholm to reduce the deficit to a single goal. The equaliser came on 82 minutes. Willie MacKinnon’s corner was cleared by the Newtonmore defence but Dugald “Horace” Ross collected the ball in midfield and played it back in to the danger area, forcing Chisholm to knock it clear. However Skye full centre Caley MacLean came rushing into the area to bullet the ball into the net. The force of the shot took the ball through a hole in the side of the net and despite the claims from Hugh Chisholm that the ball must have gone past the post, the goal stood. Skye went all out for the winning goal that their play deserved. However they nearly lost both points when Newtonmore broke and it took a brilliant block from young Skye full back John “Spod” MacLeod to prevent Allan MacKintosh completing his hat-trick and winning the game for the visitors. Best for Skye were Caley MacLean, Dugald “Horace” Ross, Willie MacKinnon and 2 goal Duncan MacDougall. Skye’s final North Division 1 match was a trip to Balgate to play Lovat. |
