Kingussie’s Ronald Ross Reflects On Title Win. | |
07 December 2009 Kingussie talisman Ronald Ross scored the majority of his sides 82 goals during their Scottish Hydro National Premier Division win and he spoke to Radio Following Newtonmore’s win over Inveraray 2 weeks ago, Kingussie had to beat Kyles Athletic to win the title on goal difference so Ross and his team mates knew what they had to do. “We didn’t have to worry about scoring goals” he said, “We just had to win the game and it obviously helped us that we knew what we had to do to win the league. We are obviously delighted and it’s great to pip Newtonmore to win something this year.” Ross does not accept that the season has been a disappointment for Kingussie, regardless of how the league campaign might have ended. “People have written Kingussie off saying that if we do not win the game, then it’s a trophy-less season which would have been right. But we got to the final of the MacTavish and only lost to a last minute goal. We got to the Macaulay Cup Final but lost that as well. We could also have been in the final of the Camanachd Cup if the first semi final hadn’t been abandoned when we were 4-1 up with only 20 minutes to go. So it wasn’t that bad a season – most clubs would have taken that at the start of the season. Obviously to win the league rounds it off and I’ve always said that the league is testament to the best team over the season and I’ve always said that – even when Newtonmore were ahead earlier in the season. It’s tremendous to have kept going. It’s been a long season, we started in March and we are still going in December. It’s been great for the lads and also with Jimmy Gow retiring and to beat our rivals Newtonmore. It’s a great day.” Reflecting on his own contribution, the With Stevie Borthwick announced as Kingussie’s first team manager for the 2010 season, Ross’ thoughts now turn to the next campaign. “The incoming manager is going to give youth its chance and there may be some players in our team retiring now. But we’ve got a platform to build on; we still have a core of very good players and we can add some of the young ones. We had Ryan Borthwick playing today and he’s still only 16 and still has another year in the Juveniles and there are other young ones coming up who have a chance I think that Stevie Borthwick is going to play them next year.” Ross acknowledges that such a change-over in personnel could make things difficult next season saying, “It will be a learning curve for the younger players. But if we can still keep in there and not be too far down the table and I don’t know how competitive it will be next year but I’m sure we’ll be there or thereabouts certainly in the Cup competitions and if we can get back the Camanachd Cup then that will be a great achievement for us next year.” With an eye on the opposition, Ross added, “I’m sure the other teams will be regrouping as well. Kyles for example are a very young team and they will be up there next season I’m sure along with |
