30 November 2009 Lochaber U14 clinched the North Division 3 title with a 4-0 win over Skye Camanachd B U14 at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 28 November 2009. Both sides have been in great form in the league this season and the outcome of this game was always going to decide the destination of the U14 North Division 3 title. It was the young Skye side who enjoyed the early pressure but they couldn’t convert their possession into an opening goal. When the first goal came it was at the other end and when a clearance from the Skye defence fell to Lochaber’s Jack Dignan, he sent a glorious 20 yard drive into the top right-hand corner of Iain MacLeod’s goal. On 14 minutes, Skye keeper Iain MacLeod made a fantastic waist high save to his right from a Connor MacCallum effort and he blocked a shot from the rebound with his feet before clearing the ball for a corner. This was the first of a string of great save from MacLeod during the game. Lochaber went 2-0 up on 31 minutes. Duncan MacKinnon fired a great shot on target and although MacLeod got his stick to the ball, it dropped agonisingly just over the goal line. The Skye youngsters responded though and Lochaber keeper Stuart Matheson had to look lively to clear a looping shot from the left from Iain MacPherson. Skye suffered a double blow just before the break when they lost 2 of their top performers. Buckshee back Ruairidh Morrison had to come off with a recurrence of a knee injury and wing centre Will Cowie suffered a nasty blow to the shin which later required hospital treatment. Skye keeper Iain MacLeod was back in action 4 minutes into the second half when he saved another Jack Dignan piledriver and he also did well to block a shot from the resultant corner. Skye lost their third player through injury 7 minutes into the second period when Angie MacPherson suffered a blow to the hand which also required a trip to casualty. A Paul Wotherspoon rocket shot made it 3-0 to the visitors 10 minutes into the second half and a minute later MacLeod saved well from Connor MacCallum. Referee John Angus Gillies booked Lochaber’s Liam Kane midway through the half for an unnecessary swing at Skye’s Iain MacPherson when the ball had gone out of play. Iain MacLeod turned a Duncan MacKinnon effort round the post for a corner 5 minutes from the end and Lochaber made it 4-0 in injury time when a low Connor MacCallum drive crept in at the post. Ruairidh Morrison and Will Cowie were excellent in the first half for Skye and keeper Iain MacLeod was a good shout for man of the match. Johnnie MacDonald, Scott MacDonald and Euen Forrest can also be pleased with their displays for the Islanders. This was a deserved win for the more experienced Lochaber team. They were well served by Callum MacDonald, Barry MacDonald and Jack Dignan and all 3 players are regulars in the Lochaber second team. Duncan MacKinnon was always a threat up front. Scotland U21 Head Coach Donnie Martin presented the North Division 3 Shield to Lochaber U14 captain Jack Dignan and both sides enjoyed an after-match meal in the Skye Camanachd Clubhouse.
