Memory Lane – Season 1986 / 87 – Part 7. | |
30 November 2009 Skye Camanachd went top of North Division 1 with a deserved 2-0 win over Beauly at the King George V Park, Portree. The match was played in heavy conditions and although Skye had most of the first half pressure, they didn’t really create many chances in front of goal. The Skye defence on the other hand were in determined mood and did not look like giving anything away. There were hardly any clear cut first half chances and not surprisingly the match remained goalless at the interval. Skye went close on 57 minutes when Duncan MacDougall played in Caley MacLean on the Skye right. The Skye full centre found Minutes later Peter Gordon and Calum Murchison combined for the latter to also fire just over. Skye had a chance to take the lead when a thunderous drive from Peter Gordon came back off the crossbar and the goal judge flagged to indicate that the Beauly keeper had kicked the ball out for a corner. A penalty was awarded by the referee and Beauly full back Davie Symons was booked for taking his protests too far. There was disappointment for the Skye support though as Calum Murchison’s penalty went just over the bar. Skye player / manager introduced Davie MacLeod in place of Shorty Murchison and the move paid dividends with just 10 minutes to go. Caley MacLean played in a corner which MacLeod knocked into the path of Peter Gordon and he gave the keeper no chance as he fired a crisp, low shot into the back of the net. Skye put the result beyond doubt 5 minutes later and MacLeod was again involved as he battled to win possession on the Skye right to set up Calum Murchison who blasted a first time shot into the net from 10 yards. This was a welcome win for Skye but the so far unbeaten Islanders faced a tough prospect in their next league outing when they travel to play Newtonmore at the Eilan. |
