Memory Lane – Season 1986 / 87 – Part 3. | |
25 November 2009 Archie MacDonald faced a tough challenge in his first match in charge of the Skye Camanachd second team as they took on reigning champions Kingussie in Portree. The Badenoch side travelled to Portree with only 11 players – playing with just 3 forwards - which put them at an immediate disadvantage. The Kings held out for the first 18 minutes until John MacRae played a ball forward which caught out the Badenoch side’s defence and found Ally “Digg” MacDonald who slipped the ball past keeper Ian Anderson to give Skye the lead. Skye pressured the Kingussie goal and John Angus Gillies, Angie Murchison and Ally MacDonald all had chances to increase Skye’s lead with MacDonald finding the net only to have his effort ruled out for offside. However it was the visitors who got themselves back in the game on 33 minutes through the energetic Billy Fraser. Andy MacLean came on for his debut at the start of the second half in place of Alasdair Morrison and although he took time to settle into the game, it was clear from his overall performance that he would be an asset for the Islanders. Skye went 2-1 up 4 minutes after the break when Angie Murchison pounced on an opportunity after Five minutes later John MacRae launched a 25 yard shot on goal which bounced awkwardly in front of the Kingussie keeper. Angie Murchison scored his second with a vicious 20 yard drive after 64 minutes and he completed his hat-trick when he got on the end of a great midfield pass from Donnie Martin to make it 5-1. Murchison rounded off a great personal performance when he scored his fourth and Skye’s sixth just 5 minutes from time. This was an encouraging all round display from Skye and Angie Murchison and Ally MacDonald were top performers as Archie MacDonald’s side claimed the scalp of the champions in their opening match. It was to be a trip to Drumnadrochit to play Glenurquhart next for Skye. |
