North U17 4 South U17 1. | |
16 November 2009 The North U17 side became the first winners of the Fife Council Cup with a 4-1 win over South U17 at Tulliallan, The North were without Beauly’s Ian Broadhead who was unavailable and Newtonmore duo Rory Kennedy and Chris Seller who were late call offs. Skye Camanachd’s Martin Bruce was called into the squad and The North took an early lead when Lovat’s Greg Matheson capitalised on a half chance to fire his side ahead. The North looked like they were going to run away with the match when Kingussie’s Martin Dallas made it 2-0 just minutes later. However the South fought back and a goal from Oban Camanachd’s Craig MacDougall reduced the North’s advantage to a single goal at half time. North coach Ally Ferguson introduced Skye Camanachd’s Neil John Campbell at wing centre during the second period but, despite the promptings from Lochaber’s Ben Delaney at full centre, his side couldn’t get the killer third goal. When they did make the break-through it was a terrific shot from left wing centre Josh McGhee from The South, prompted by the excellent Sandy MacVicar, pushed hard to try and get back into the game. Lochaber keeper Cammy Kennedy made a couple of excellent saves and his Kinlochshiel’s Sander Grant had an excellent game as did Glenurquhart’s Drew MacLennan in defence. Grant was unlucky to be sent-off by referee Euen Pearson for a second yellow card just minutes from the end but Greg Matheson ended the game as a contest when he ran in on goal to net his second and the North’s fourth goal to seal a 4-1 win. A representative from Fife Council presented the Fife Council Cup to North captain Sander Grant.
