27 August 2009 Skye Camanachd A U14 won through to the MacMaster Cup Final win a 13-0 win over Newtonmore at Pairc nan Laoch on The match also doubled up as a North Division 1 league fixture which meant a double success for the Skye youngsters. Mark Mortimer was a late call off from the squad but otherwise, Coach There was a minute’s silence at the start on the match in honour of Mairi Murchison. Mairi passed away in the early hours of Monday 17 August 2009 and her son Jordan Murchison is of course the Skye Camanachd U14 team captain. Another of Mairi’s sons, Stephen, is also a shinty player who enjoyed considerable success with Portree Primary School last year. Although Newtonmore broke up-field from immediately from the throw up, the Skye defence broke up the attack and Shaun Hedley’s clearance reach the forward line. Skye full forward Stuart MacSween took full advantage to run in on goal and his neat finish gave Skye the lead. Skye broke again from the throw up and some good work by Euan Forrest set up a chance for Will Cowie and the 12 year old made no mistake. Cowie added a second a minute later and when Jordan Murchison netted from a Euan Forrest corner after only 5 minutes to make the score 4-0 to the hosts, things looked ominous for Newtonmore. However Newtonmore coach Michael Ritchie made some positional changes to the defence which seemed to stem the tide. A good Skye move between Chris MacLennan and Jordan Murchison resulted in the latter shooting just over. Stuart MacSween scored his second on 18 minutes when he slammed the ball home to make it 5-0 after an Will Cowie started a nice passing move between the Skye forwards which Stuart MacSween finished off to complete his hat-trick just 3 minutes Will Cowie completed his hat-trick 6 minutes into the second half when he shot low into the net. Substitute Angie Grant was quickly in action and he set up his cousin Will Cowie reacted best in a goalmouth scramble to bag his fourth and make the score 11-0 just 3 minutes later. Iain MacLeod in the Skye goal had little to do during the match. However midway through the second half he produced the save of the match when he stopped a 25 yard shot from the Newtonmore right with his caman, when the ball was heading for the roof of the net. Newtonmore keeper John Duncan MacLeod also made some good saves during the match but when he stopped a Jordan Murchison shot with his left foot off the ground, referee Eoghan Stewart had no option but to award a penalty. Murchison took responsibility, stepped forward, and expertly blasted the ball into the net. Murchison completed the scoring when he fired a rocket shot into the net from an Angie Grant corner to complete a 13-0 win for Skye. Angie Grant had the ball in the net but it was ruled out for offside. Skye had introduced substitutes Angie Grant, Kyle Pirie and Connor Henderson and they all performed well. Iain MacLeod and Shaun Hedley were rarely troubled at the back and Johnnie MacDonald has fitted into the side really well since making the step up from the B team. The Skye forwards were particularly good to watch and as well as the goalscorers, Ruairidh Morrison in defence was excellent whilst Calum Gibb put in a tenacious display. Chris MacLennan at full centre dominated the centre line, and he was ably assisted by wing centres Euan Forrest and Magnus Burd. Skye can now look forward to a MacMaster Cup Final for the first time in 5 years with the added bonus of gained 2 league points as they bid to defend their North Division 1 title.
