26 July 2009 The MacPhee & Partners Macaulay Cup Final will be between Kingussie and Inveraray following the semi finals and Glenurquhart go top of the Scottish Hydro National Premier Division on Saturday 25 July 2009. Lochaber and Kingussie met at Drumnadrochit in the MacPhee & Partners Macaulay Cup North semi final. Lochaber were determined not to suffer a repeat of their heavy defeat at the Dell a few weeks ago and they welcomed the previously suspended Ben Delaney, Hughie Innes and Martin Johnstone back into their squad. A Ronald Ross double gave Kingussie a 2-0 lead until Lochaber’s Sean Nicolson reduced the deficit. Ross completed a first half hat-trick before a Ben Delaney strike meant the Kings only had a single goal lead at half time. Another double from Ross took his personal tally to 5 and although Andy MacDonald pulled a goal back for the South sides Inveraray and Oban Camanachd met at Taynuilt in the other semi final. Inveraray won the Celtic Society Cup Final meeting between the sides however Oban Camanachd won an earlier league meeting. Chris Crawford put Inveraray ahead after 25 minutes and Stuart Robertson doubled their lead 5 minutes before the break. Aiden MacIntyre reduced the deficit on the hour mark but Inveraray held on to clinch a final place. Oban Camanachd’s had Liam MacIntyre red carded in the 86 minute – he had only just returned from suspension following his sending off in the Celtic Society Cup Final. Match of the day in the Scottish Hydro Premier Division was at the Eilan where Newtonmore hosted Glenorchy had a John Surtain goal to show for their efforts against Kyles Athletic at Dalmally but counter strikes from Robbie MacLeod, a Grant Irvine double and a Colin MacDonald strike gave Kyles a 4-1 win and lifted them into fifth place in the table. The Glen have 5 league games to go to save their top flight status. However 2 of these matches are against reigning champions Kingussie which demonstrates the size of the task they face. Glenurquhart sit proudly at the top of the Scottish Hydro Premier League following their 2-1 win over Beauly and Kilmallie played out a titanic battle at The Caberfeidh, Strathglass clash was postponed following the death of former Strathglass player Scott Bain. The west coast derby honours went to Kinlochshiel who beat Lochcarron 2-0 at Battery Park. Alan MacKenzie’s hamstring problem meant that he started on the bench for Lochcarron with Ross Matheson starting at full back. Neil Fraser gave Shiel a first half lead and a second from Keith MacRae on the hour mark sealed the points for Shiel. So Lochcarron’s quest for their first league point continues whilst Kinlochshiel can look forward with confidence to next week’s visit from Kilmallie. League leaders Skye Camanachd did not have a game. Marine Harvest South Division 1 leaders Lochside Rovers enjoyed a narrow 4-3 win over Glasgow Mid Argyll. Lochside started the season with 7 straight wins but followed that up with a draw and a defeat in their previous 2 league outings, so they will be glad to have got back on their winning way. Oban Celtic avenged their early season 4-1 defeat to Tayforth in The match between second place Kilmory and Ballachulish at The top 3 sides in Marine Harvest North Division 2 all enjoyed good wins. Glenurquhart stay top following a 4-1 win over fourth place Lovat at Drumnadrochit. Calum Fraser gave them the lead after 10 minutes and Iain MacLeod made it 2-0 just 6 minutes later. Ewen Brady got in on the act with a goal 11 minutes into the second half and although Jimmy MacKenzie pulled a goal back on 65 minutes, Calum Fraser scored his second right on full time to complete a 4-1 win. Second place Kingussie racked up 9 goals against Glengarry at the Dell. Thomas Borthwick scored 4 goals for the second successive Saturday and his strike partner Rory Borthwick also found the net. Darren Hanlin and Louis Munro also scored for the home side as did the more experienced duo of Davie Anderson and Michael Clark. Andrew Paterson scored Glengarry’s consolation goal. Reigning champions Newtonmore had a good 6-1 win over Caberfeidh at the Eilan. Newtonmore full forward David Wilde followed up his good scoring run of 3 goals in his last 2 league outings with a hat-trick. Mark MacDonald gave ‘More a 12 minute lead with what was the only goal of the first half. There was an incredible scoring burst at the start of the second half with 6 goals in 13 minutes. David Wilde made it 2-0 after 49 minutes but Cabers pulled a goal back with a Gary MacLennan penalty after 51 minutes. Chris Seller restored the home side’s 2 goal advantage just a couple of minutes later and David Wilde scored his second almost straight from the throw up. Andy MacKintosh made it 5-0 after 57 minutes and Wilde completed his hat-trick on 62 minutes. Newtonmore remain in sixth place but they are now 3 points clear of seventh place Skye Camanachd. The match between Kilmallie and Skye Camanachd was postponed as the Skye players were attending Margaret Ross’ funeral. The biggest surprise in Marine Harvest South Division 2 was second place Strachur’s defeat at bottom club Ballachulish. Craig Munro, Gary Young and Malcolm Grant were amongst the scorers for the home side to give them their first points of the season whilst Alistair Mirlees and Ronnie Campbell got the Strachur goals. Strachur’s defeat allowed league leaders Taynuilt to go 3 points clear with 3 games in hand after their 2 goal win at home to sixth place Kyles Athletic put 6 past third place Col Glen at Tigh na Bruach. Gordon Whyte was their top marksman with 4 and Alistair MacKay and Peter Mobeck got the others. Rupert Williamson replied for Col Glen. Kyles also had an impressive 4-0 win when the sides met in April and they have now done the double over Col Glen. Fourth place Aberdour lost 5-1 at Dalmally against second bottom Glenorchy. Duncan Smith hit a double and Rory MacKay, John Smith, and Keith MacRae got the others. Lochbroom’s extended their lead at the top of Marine Harvest North Division 3 following their convincing 6-0 home win over Boleskine. Arran Matheson gave them a great start with a goal after only 2 minutes. Cammie MacRae gave Lochbroom a 2-0 half time lead with a 16 minute strike. A couple of goals on 50 and 52 minutes from Jamie Dorrans and Jamie MacFadyen saw off Boleskine’s challenge. Sandy Urquhart scored Lochbroom’s fifth after 70 minutes and Arran Matheson notched his second 10 minutes later. Lochcarron and Lochaber played out an entertaining clash at Battery Park on Friday 24 July 2009. The home side made a great start when The match between Ardnamurchan and Strathglass has been postponed and Beauly were awarded the points as Kincraig were unable to raise a team for the visit to |
