05 July 2009 There was another exciting set of matches played on Saturday 4 July 2009 with hat-tricks, cup shocks, sendings off, a few examples of what a difference a week can make and a goal scoring referee! The MacPhee & Partners Macaulay Cup took centre stage and it took extra time to separate Inveraray and Kyles Athletic at Winterton. Grant Griffen got the home side off to a great start with a goal after 2 minutes. Their joy was short lived though as The first example of what a difference a week can make came in the MacPhee & Partners Macaulay Cup second round tie at An Aird where Kingussie got back on the winning ways with a second round win over Glenurquhart but they didn’t have it all their own way. Kingussie, without the injured Ronald Ross, took the lead after 12 minutes through Russell Dallas. However Andrew Corrigan leveled for Glenurquhart 4 minutes from half time. Veteran Kevin Thain put the Kings ahead 7 minutes into the second half but it took until 15 minutes from the end to seal victory with a strike from Rory Borthwick. Paul Gow made the final score 4-1 with a strike 5 minutes from the end. Oban Camanachd breezed past Glenorchy at Dalmally when a Scott MacMillan double and goals from David Devine, Andrew McCuish and Iain MacMillan gave them a 5-2 win. Grant MacPherson from the penalty spot and Kieran MacKay replied for Glenorchy. Newtonmore collected 2 valuable and hard earned points with a Scottish Hydro National Premier Division win by the odd goal in 7 against Kilmallie were the main winners in Marine Harvest North Division 1 as they beat leaders Skye Camanachd and leap-frogged Beauly – who lost to Caberfeidh – into second place in the table. Skye – who were another example of the difference a week can make after beating Kinlochshiel 6-0 in their last outing - contained John Stewart in Portree but they were hit by a 4 goal first half blitz. There was no second half scoring and Kilmallie left the Ewen Murray continued Caberfeidh’s good start to the season with a goal at Lovat won the early throw up match at Kirkton against Kinlochshiel. Raymond Rennie put them ahead after 10 minutes but Scott Kennedy leveled 4 minutes later. James MacPherson put Lovat ahead again after half an hour and Rennie scored his second 4 minutes later to seal a 3-1 win. Strathglass increased Lochcarron’s woes with a 4-0 victory at Cannich. Andy Behan got them off to the perfect start with a goal in the first minute. Scotland U17 Development squad player Marc McLaughlin doubled their lead in 15 minutes and Darren Reid extended their advantage on the 30 minute mark. Lee Bain completed Lochcarron’s misery with a last minute effort. Lochcarron remain bottom with no points from 4 games. Marine Harvest South Division 1 leaders Lochside Rovers suffered their first defeat of the season when they lost 3-2 at second placed Kilmory. Steven Gilmour was the toast of the home side with a hat-trick and Kilmory are 6 points behind the leaders with a game in hand. Bottom club Tayforth celebrated their first victory of the season with a 4-1 over second bottom Oban Celtic in Third place Glasgow Mid Argyll enjoyed a narrow 2-1 away win over fourth placed Ballachulish. Patrick Jamieson gave them a 5 minute lead and Ryan Stewart doubled their advantage after 35 minutes. Mid Argyll had Dan Hood sent off 10 minutes from the end. The home side took advantage and John Clark pulled a goal back 5 minutes later. However Mid Argyll held on to take the points. Kyles Athletic are through to the Bullough Cup semi finals after a 4-3 win over Inveraray. A double from Angus Finlayson and two from Peter Mobeck edged them through to join Aberdour, Glenorchy and Lochside Rovers in the last four. Glenurquhart’s trip to Glengarry was a late call off. Third place Kingussie beat Kilmallie 5-0 at the Dell. Young Thomas Borthwick opened the scoring and Rory Borthwick scored his first 2 goals of the day – he also scored for the first team later in the afternoon. Scotland U17 Development squad player Ruairidh Wink and Greg MacRae also found the net. Lovat edged out Skye Camanachd in a 9 goal thriller at Balgate. Steven Cameron gave them an early lead before Martin Anderson scored a second after 10 minutes. Danny Morrison pulled a goal back for Skye a minute later but 2 goals in 2 minutes again from Cameron and Anderson again gave Lovat a 4-1 advantage. Skye rallied and a double from captain Kieran Roberts pulled Lovat’s advantage back to a single goal. Cameron completed his hat-trick right on the half time whistle to score a crucial fifth goal. Roberts completed his hat-trick 5 minutes into the second half with the goal of the game. Lovat had Martin Mainland sent off midway through the second half but the Islanders could not turn their numeric advantage into an equalizing goal. Caberfeidh won their first league match of the season last weekend and they followed this up with their second win as they overcame Kinlochshiel 3-2 at Castle Leod. Jodi Gorski gave the home side a 5 minute lead but Duncan DA MacRae leveled after 30 minutes. Andrew MacMaster made it 2-1 for Cabers after 12 minutes but MacRae scored his second for the second consecutive week after 59 minutes. Martin MacDonald scored the winner for Cabers on the hour mark to give his side an important 2 points. Marine Harvest South Division 2 leaders Taynuilt had a comprehensive 9-0 home win over Aberdour. Willie Neilson was shinty’s top scorer of the day with 4 first half goals. Duncan Gillies, Alex MacVicar, Daniel MacDonald and Gary Cameron scored the others. Second place Strachur also won as doubles from James Roy, Ian Wilson and strikes from Ronnie Campbell and Andrew Roberts gave them a 6-2 home win over Glasgow Mid Argyll. Allan Brunton and Craig Anderson scored for the visitors. Col Glen won 3-0 at Ballachulish whilst the Marine Harvest South Division 3 leaders Second placed Lochbroom also had to work hard for their points with a 4-3 win over Strathglass at Cannich. Third place Beauly made it a trio of hard earned wins for the top 3 sides when they hosted Lochbroom were awarded the points as Lochcarron were unable to travel for their league clash.
