03 July 2009 The first shinty champions of 2009 were crowned when Badenoch & Strathspey clinched the women’s North Division Two title. An 8-0 midweek victory against Lochaber at The Dell, Kingussie, gave Badenoch an unassailable lead at the top of the table and maintained their proud 100 per cent record since forming last season. Two goals apiece from Sarah Caird and twins Elizabeth and Jeanette McGregor, plus strikes from Kirsty Deans and Ishbel Knox, enabled the home side to retain the divisional trophy. In South Central Division Two Cowal & Bute collected their first points of the season with a 3-2 home win against Glasgow Mid-Argyll’s second string. Goals from Kym Pollock, Nicola Irvine and Roisin McGahan saw Cowal to victory, with Mid-Argyll replying through Karen McPherson and Laura Cammidge. The match was a dress rehearsal for the Caledonian Canal Challenge Cup quarter-final tie between the teams, which was postponed last month due to the swine flu outbreak in Dunoon.
