Portree Primary School won the National Tulloch League for the first time when they beat Kingussie 8-0 at Kiltarlity on Saturday 27 June 2009.
The shinty for the first 10 minutes was very exciting for the large crowd as the game flowed from end to end.
There was an element of fortune over Portree’s opening goal as a Connor Ross shot which was going wide, took a deflection of a Kingussie defender and ended up in the back of the net.
Portree’s second was a neat finish from Angie Grant after Will Cowie won the ball in midfield and delivered a precision pass. The same combination put Portree 3-0 ahead when a great run by Will Cowie left two defenders in his wake and his pass was expertly finished by Angie Grant from close range.
Andrew Grant got in on the act when he hit a great strike from 20 yards which gave the Kingussie keeper no chance.
Just before half-time a nice through ball from James Pringle saw Angie Grant skillfully round the keeper before passing the ball into the net to give Portree a 5-0 interval lead.
The interval margin didn't reflect the Kingussie’s good play but although the King's had as much of the game, they found the Portree defence hard to break down. The only difference between the teams was the Portree sharpness in front of goal.
Kingussie came out battling at the start of the second half and they were the better team for a 15 minute period. Once again good defending and some tidy goal keeping from Ian Patrick MacKenzie prevented Kingussie from closing the gap.
The Portee centre line then regained control of the game with Alex MacDonald and captain Stevie Murchison providing quality ball for the forwards.
A long range strike from Andrew grant was deflected into the net with 10 minutes left to play. Angie Grant then scored his fourth goal of the match with a fine 20 yard drive.
A great run and reverse pass from Johnnie Laing set up James Pringle and he made no mistake from 15 yards to complete an 8-0 win.
Substitutes Caitlin Maclean and Sean Stevenson both came of the bench to make telling contributions to a very exciting and sporting match.
Portree Primary School has now gone 2 years without defeat in any 12 a side match and great credit should go to the players for their dedication and hard work over the years. The core players from this side - Will Cowie, Andrew Grant, Angie Grant and Kyle Pirie - have been playing shinty with the School since Primary 1 and they are closely followed by Alex Macdonald and Stevie Murchison as main contributors.
A delighted Stephen Murchison became the first Portree Primary School captain to lift the Tulloch League National Trophy.
