23 June 2009 The 105th Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final between Oban Camanachd and Inveraray will take place at Old Anniesland on Saturday 27 June 2009. The sides met on league action at Mossfield on the second Saturday of the shinty season with Oban edging out a 2-1 win. This was the season’s first competitive fixture for both sides and thy have gone on to have contrasting league fortunes since. After a period as early league leaders, Oban current lie in third place with 9 points from only 6 games whilst Inveraray are second bottom with 3 points from 8 games. In what will be a fun filled day, Saturday will also see the launch of “FÈIS SPÒRS”, which is a new event for Gaelic Medium Primary Education Units in the Central Belt. At 1pm, the participating sides - Meadowburn – Bishopbriggs, Bunsgoil Gaidhlig Glaschu – Glasgow, Condorrat – Cumbernauld Tollcross – Edinburgh, Mount Cameron – East Kilbride, Onthank – Kilmarnock, Riverside – Stirling and the local junior club, Milngavie and Bearsden Shinty Club - will take part in a range of events, such as shinty, Highland Games events, and traditional school sports, such as the sack race, egg and spoon race, three-legged race, and tug-of-war. This will largely take place in Gaelic, with the emphasis on fun and participation. There will also be shinty workshops for those interested. This will be the first time that an event like this has taken place in Director of Glasgow Celtic Society, Angus MacInnes said, “We hope by embracing the culture and values of the Glasgow Celtic Society we provide a platform for our next generation of participants to engage in “FÈIS SPÒRS” has been organised in partnership with the Camanachd Association and supported by MG ALBA. The final of the U17 MacQuiston Cup between Oban Camanachd U17s and Strachur U17s also takes place before the main Final. Entry to the match is £10 and tickets will be available on the gate on the day. The Glasgow Celtic Society Final will be shown live by BBC ALBA on Sky Channel 168. The final will be refereed by Graham Cameron, with David Mitchell and George O’Rourke as goal judges, and throws up at 4pm.
