19 June 2009 Lochaber U17 added the Strathdearn 6s to an increasing haul of youth trophies at Bught Park Inverness on Lochaber already hold the U17 WJ Cameron League and MacTavish Juvenile titles and they qualified from their Strathdearn Cup league section with wins over Lochaber beat Kinlochshiel 4-1 in the semi finals. Shiel did well to qualify from a tight section on goal difference with Glenurquhart winning the group. The Glen faced Newtonmore in the second semi final and this tie finished 1-1 after full time. It took penalties to determine the finalists and Newtonmore’s Rory Kennedy – who was in More’s winning MacTavish Cup Final starting line-up last weekend - successfully converted the decisive spot hit. Newtonmore started the final well against Lochaber and keeper Cammy Kennedy had to look lively on a couple of occasions. However Lochaber took the lead with probably the goal of the tournament. Connor Sweeney collected a pass from midfield and played the ball wide on the right to Stuart Callison who sent a perfectly times return pass for the Sweeny, who had continued his run goalwards, and the youngster despatched the ball into the net. Lochaber added a second when Connor Sweeney was played in following a good run by Ben Delaney and he made no mistake.
Lochaber even had the luxury of a missed penalty in the second half before Ben Delaney blasted their third goal into the net. Newtonmore pulled a goal back through Blair MacKintosh but Lochaber, who were also well served in defence by Danny Delaney and Brenan MacDonald went on to win 3-1. |
