28 May 2009 Ronald Ross scoring his 1,000th senior goal to ensure that it will be an all Badenoch MacTavish Cup Final, was the highlight from the matches played on Kingussie started as favourites when they visited Balgate in the MacTavish Cup semi final to take on Marine Harvest North Division 1 side Lovat. However they didn’t have this tie all their own way and they certainly had Ronald Ross to thank once again for their victory. Russell Dallas gave the visitors the lead after 25 minutes and Ronald Ross doubled their advantage 10 minutes later. James MacKenzie pulled a goal back for Lovat on 37 minutes and James MacKenzie leveled the tie on 41 minutes. However Ross gave the Kings an interval advantage with a penalty right on half time. Kingussie extended their lead 5 minutes after the break through Kevin Thain but MacKenzie reduced the difference to a single goal once again with his second strike just a couple of minutes later. Then, incredibly, Greg Matheson leveled the tie at 4-4 with a goal after 70 minutes. This is when Ross really made the difference with a double strike to finally break Lovat. The first of these on 73 minutes was his 1,000th senior goal for Kingussie, a truly remarkable achievement and a feat is not likely to ever be repeated in shinty. In true Ross style, we didn’t have to wait too long for his 1,001st effort as it arrived only 2 minutes later. Veteran Kevin Thain scored his second 5 minutes from the end to seal a 7-4 win. Newtonmore got over the disappointment of last week’s Camanachd Cup exit to Kyles Athletic when beat The MacTavish Cup Final between Kingussie and Newtonmore takes place at the The final place in the Camanachd Cup quarter finals was decided when Glenurquhart romped to what could be a very significant victory over Glenorchy at Blairbeg in the National Premier League. The sides drew 1-1 at Dalmally earlier in the season and but this time the Glen capitalised on their home advantage and found their goal scoring touch and ran out 6-1 winners. Andrew Corrigan returned to the side and opened the scoring after only 5 minutes. Billy Urquhart added a second after 26 minutes and Lewis MacLennan made it three just 5 minutes later. Urquhart fired in his second 3 minutes after the break and the young striker completed his hat-trick on the hour mark. The Glen’s sixth was an own goal and Ewan Murray pulled back a consolation goal for Glenorchy in the final minute. Glenurquhart are now one of four teams on 7 points in third equal place. More importantly as the side promoted from last season’s Marine Harvest North Division 1, they have put 4 points between themselves and the teams at the bottom of the table. Lochaber got back on winning ways against Inveraray at Oban Camanachd and Kyles Athletic met at Mossfield in the Celtic Society Cup semi final. These sides will also meet at the same venue in the Camanachd Cup quarter finals and its first blood to Oban Camanachd as they ran out 2-0 winners. Ian MacMillan gave them the lead 5 minutes before the break and Scott MacMillan sent them through to the final with a second goal on 55 minutes. Marine Harvest North Division 1 leaders Skye Camanachd traveled to Castle Leod and came home with the points following a single goal win over Caberfeidh. This is the first of two back to back league clashes between the sides and it was Skye’s Ally MacLennan who got the crucial strike on the hour mark. The winning margin would have been greater but for some fine goal keeping from Caber’s Archie Ritchie. . Second placed Kilmallie were too strong for Top played bottom in Marine Harvest South Division 1 as leaders Lochside Rovers hosted Tayforth. A hat-trick from Rover’s Johnnie Will and a Drew Walker double ensured this one went to form. In Marine Harvest North Division 2, leaders Glenurquhart traveled to Portree and gave Skye Camanachd a lesson in the art of finishing. Ben Hosie and David Smart both hit hat-tricks and Bradley Dixon and 13 year old Ewan Brady got the others to keep the Glen out in front. Col Glen beat Glenorchy 4-0 in Marine Harvest South Division 2. Ronnie MacVicar, James Hamilton, Jamie Sutton and Preston Shuttleworth got the goals that lit Col Glen into fourth place in the table. The Strathdearn Cup quarter finalists are now known following the last 16 matches. Beauly beat Kincraig 5-0 at A Davis MacCuish strike after 20 minutes gave Lochcarron a great single goal victory over Lochaber at Goals from Ali MacAdam and Raymond Fraser were not enough for Strathglass against Newtonmore at Cannich and the visitors ran out 5-2 winners. Newtonmore will now travel to Battery Park to take on Lochcarron in the quarter finals. Lovat traveled to Kirkton in the Friday night match and beat Kinlochshiel 6-1. A double from Jimmy MacKenzie after 15 and 35 minutes and a Martin Mainland strike a couple of minutes later gave the visitors a 3-0 interval lead. Duncan Davidson added another 5 minutes after the break and although Duncan DA MacRae pulled a goal back after 53 minutes, goals from Martin Anderson and Euan Ferguson sealed the win. Kilmallie had a single goal victory against Boleskine at Farr and the will now travel to Balgate to take on Lovat in the next round. North Division 3 second placed side Lochbroom had a difficult tie against Kingussie who are in the league above. The Kings eventually ran out 6-0 winners through a Thomas Purfoot double and strikes from David Borthwick, Martin Dallas, Rory Borthwick, and Craig Dawson and this was despite having David Borthwick sent off after only 12 minutes. North Division 3 leaders The Bullough Cup quarter finals saw the Forces side The Scots go down 4-2 at Aberdour at Inveraray. A MacPherson and Donald MacKenzie scored for the Scots with a double from Joe Duncan and one each from Ali Shaw and Calum Shaw eventually seeing Aberdour through. Late goals from Willie Neilson and Willie Gillies cancelled out a first half Duncan MacNicol to earn Taynuilt victory over Strachur. Glasgow Mid Argyll lost 2-0 at home to North Division 2 bottom side Ballachulish lost 3-1 at home to Inveraray in the |
