Ronald Ross Scores 1,000 Goals And Ensures An All Badenoch MacTavish Cup Final. | |
25 May 2009 Ronald Ross scored his 1,000th senior goal to ensure that it will be an all Badenoch MacTavish Cup Final following the semi finals on Saturday 23 May 2009. Kingussie started as favourites when they visited Balgate in the MacTavish Cup semi final to take on Marine Harvest North Division 1 side Lovat. However they didn’t have this tie all their own way and they certainly had Ronald Ross to thank once again for their victory. Russell Dallas gave the visitors the lead after 25 minutes and Ronald Ross doubled their advantage 10 minutes later. James MacKenzie pulled a goal back for Lovat on 37 minutes and James MacKenzie leveled the tie on 41 minutes. However Ross gave the Kings an interval advantage with a penalty right on half time. Kingussie extended their lead 5 minutes after the break through Kevin Thain but MacKenzie reduced the difference to a single goal once again with his second strike just a couple of minutes later. Then, incredibly, Greg Matheson leveled the tie at 4-4 with a goal after 70 minutes. This is when Ross really made the difference with a double strike to finally break Lovat. The first of these on 73 minutes was his 1,000th senior goal for Kingussie, a truly remarkable achievement and a feat is not likely to ever be repeated in shinty. In true Ross style, we didn’t have to wait too long for his 1,001st effort as it arrived only 2 minutes later. Veteran Kevin Thain scored his second 5 minutes from the end to seal a 7-4 win.
