Skye Camanachd 3 Kilmallie 2. | |
17 May 2009 The Skye Camanachd second team won two vital points when they beat Kilmallie in North Division 2 at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 16 May 2009. Skye Camanachd manager Davie MacVicar was forced to make some late changes to his squad. Danny Morrison was forced to withdraw with a chest infection and injury also robbed him of captain Ross Graham and Paul MacKinnon. There were a total of six changes from the side that drew with Glengarry. Young Scott MacLeod kept his place in goal and Iain Urquhart came in at wing back for his first appearance of the season. David Grant and Martin Bruce continued in the central defensive positions and Neil John Campbell came in at left wing back in place of Andrew Banks who was unavailable. Neil MacVicar joined Scott Martin and Stewart Grant in the centre line in place of Iain MacPherson. This was his first senior match since he suffered a double fracture to the jaw against Kingussie in March. Danny Morrison, Paul MacKinnon and Allan MacKinnon were missing from the attack however the influential Peter Gordon returned as did captain for the day Kieran Roberts. Iain Grant started after a late call up and Iain Morrison retained his place in the attack. Angie MacDonald dropped to the bench and the late call offs meant that MacVicar had to name himself as second substitute. Kilmallie were first to have a serious attempt on goal and Scott MacLeod made a great save under his crossbar from an Andrew MacAlister shot after 8 minutes. A couple of minutes later, a delightful flick by Iain Morrison set up Kieran Roberts but his shot went just past the post. Mark Graham gave the visitors the lead after 15 minutes when the Skye defence failed to clear a ball into the danger area. Kilmallie keeper Kevin Toye did well to save from Peter Gordon after 22 minutes and the keeper saved well again after 38 minutes, clearing the ball for a corner. However Neil MacVicar fired the resultant corner across the goal and Iain Grant lost his marker and first timed the ball into the net to level the match. Skye went back on the offensive at the start of the second half and Pater Gordon set up Iain Grant but the youngster’s shot went just wide. A shot from distance from Kilmallie full centre Robbie MacGregor after 54 minutes evaded Scott MacLeod in the Skye goal and gave the visitors the lead one more. Skye responded well though and after 61 minutes Iain Grant linked up well with Iain Morrison and Neil MacVicar was just unable to get on the end of Morrison’s cross. The resultant clearance went straight to Peter Gordon and his rocket shot gave Toye no chance. Just 5 minutes from the end, Scott MacLeod made a fantastic save from Mark Graham and he made another good stop moments later to deny Kilmallie again. The Skye winner came just a minute later when Iain Grant played in Peter Gordon. Gordon slipped the ball to Neil MacVicar who had been pushed on into the forward line. MacVicar then sent a glorious 30 yard drive low past Toye to win the points for Skye. Angie MacDonald set up MacVicar at the death but he shot over just over. Skye had several good performances and the back line of David Grant, Martin Bruce, Neil John Campbell and the physical presence of Iain Urquhart stood out. This win takes Skye up to seventh place in the league, just a point behind Kilmallie and Glengarry. The Islanders will now host league leaders at Pairc nan Laoch on Saturday 23 May 2009.
