Kinlochshiel 1 Skye Camanachd 2. | |
17 May 2009 Skye Camanachd moved three points clear at the top of Marine Harvest North Division 1 with a win over Kinlochshiel at Kirkton on Saturday 16 May 2009. Skye Camanachd manager Angie Murchison had to reshuffle his defence for this local derby with Steven Morrison injured and John Moir unavailable. Jamie MacDonald was switched to full back and Allan MacLeod came back into the side. AB Connor and Iain Nicolson continued in the wing back positions. Skye played up the slope in the first half but they did have the benefit of the wind at their backs. However it was the home side who almost took the lead in the opening minute but Gordie MacDonald spurned the chance. Skye took the lead after 21 minutes when Somhairle MacDonald ran in to sweep the ball into the net. They increased their lead on 38 minutes when a Dougie Rankin shot evaded the Shiel keeper and ended up in the back of the net. Shiel started the second half the stronger and in 62 minutes, Neil Fraser reacted best in a goal mouth scramble to score from the edge of the penalty area. Murchison freshened things up with a double substitution – Shockie MacLennan and Norman MacLeod replacing Kerr Gibb and Alan Palmer respectively. The Islanders held on to win two vital points in what is going to be a very interesting championship race. Skye manager Angie Murchison was delighted with the two points, especially as Shiel have been on a fine run of form recently with cup wins over Kilmallie and Premier League Glenurquhart. He was especially pleased with the performance of his make-shift defence and the desire shown by his players to get their bodies between the Shiel players and the Skye goal. He also knows that not many sides will visit Kirkton this season and come away with both points. Skye now have two more vital points to play for next weekend when the visit Castle Leod in the first of two back to back league games against Caberfeidh.
