Skye Camanachd B, Uist and Lochcarron played out a fantastic afternoon’s shinty at the all-weather pitch at Portree High School on Saturday 8 May 2009.
Skye Camanachd B took on Uist in the afternoon’s first match. Skye scored a couple of early goals through Angie Grant and Will Cowie but Uist fought back and reduced the deficit with a Craig Erskine strike.
Angie Grant and Euan Forest scored to give the hosts a 4-1 interval lead.
Skye went on to score further goals in the second half through Euan Forrest and Andrew Grant made before Iain MacPherson double took the final score to 8-1.
Uist then took on Lochcarron and they started the match the stronger, perhaps after having the benefit of the opening game. Carl MacPhee scored twice after some good early pressure from Uist but Lochcarron got back into the match when Izzy Dalgetty scored a good goal just before the break.
Lochcarron came more into the game in the second half but it was Uist that scored from a breakaway when Carl MacPhee went on to complete his hat-trick. To the delight of the Uist team and supporters, they managed to hang on to this lead and finished the game 3-1 victors.
Skye created plenty chances early in the final game against Lochcarron but a combination of poor finishing and some super goalkeeping from Lochcarron’s stand-in keeper Matthew Young kept the scores level early on.
Skye did finally manage to break down a much improved Lochcarron side with goals from Euan Forrest and Will Cowie.
In the second half, Skye had the bulk of the pressure but found Matthew Young in inspired form. Andrew Grant completed the scoring towards the end making the final score Skye 3 - 0 Lochcarron.
Lochcarron will be pleased with Matthew Young’s goalkeeping performance and Izzy Dalgetty played well throughout.
Uist had good performances from Ewen Campbell and Carl MacPhee and their much improved younger players.
