04 May 2009 Skye Camanachd and Lochaber played out a thrilling MacTavish Juvenile Cup first round tie at Pairc nan Laoch on Monday 4 May 2009. Lochaber were 2008 WJ Cameron League champions and they sent a strong squad to Portree as they have only lost four players from last year’s squad. Skye also have a strong squad this year having only lost Shockie MacLennan and Iain MacPherson from last year’s side. Lochaber played with a strong wind at their backs in the first half and they immediately set about putting the Skye goal under pressure. They got their reward after 10 minutes when Skye failed to deal with a long ball from midfield from Ben Delaney and Connor Sweeney pounced to give the Skye responded well though and Danny Morrison, who had a great tussle with his marker Danny Delaney, flicked the ball to Jordan Murchison who forced the ball over the line. Just when Skye looked as if they were going to reach the interval on level terms, Stewart Callison blasted the ball, high past Jamie Patterson from 15 yards to put the visitors ahead. Skye started the second half strongly and Cammy Kennedy made a great save with his foot from a Danny Morrison. He then had a brilliant save above his head after Morrison had set up Jordan Murchison. Skye were piling on the pressure at this stage and Kennedy had to be at his best again to stop a goal-bound 30 yard effort from Neil MacVicar. With 10 minutes remaining and just when a Skye goal seemed inevitable, Lochaber broke and a Patrick Toal shot took a wicked deflection of a Skye defender and flew high past Patterson into the net. Skye were not about to concede defeat though and they responded a couple of minutes later when Danny Morrison scored to bring the deficit back to a single goal. Skye pressed for an equalising goal to take the match into extra time but the Skye defence, in which Iain Grant was outstanding, had to be on their toes to deal with Lochaber counter-attacks. However the Lochaber defence, for which Brenan MacDonald was a tower of strength, held out and they go through to the second round. Skye will now be left to concentrate on their league programme as they look to build on last week’s win over Lovat.
