20 April 2009 The Camanachd Cup first round took centre stage on Lovat and Strathglass might not have repeated their recent MacTavish Cup goal fest but the outcome was still the same as Lovat ran out single goal winners in their Camanachd Cup tie. Greg Matheson gave them the lead but Lee Bain equalised for the Cannich side. Lovat’s Ewan Ferguson was the match winner and he secured the Kiltarlidy side a second round home tie to Premier League bottom club Glenorchy. Kilmallie raced into a two goal lead against Skye Camanachd in Portree with strikes from John Stewart and Trevor Jackson. Skye stormed back in the second half and goals from brothers Gilleasbuig and Somhairle MacDonald levelled the tie. However a last minute finish from John Stewart won Kilmallie a second round derby trip to An Aird to face Camanachd Cup holders David MacLean hit a hat trick as Beauly ran out 5-0 winners at A Kirk Taylor strike gave Caberfeidh a single goal victory over Kilmory at Castle Leod. Cabers “reward” is a trip to the Dell to face Kingussie. A Mark Bain double was not enough for Glasgow Mid Argyll against Lochcarron. The west coast side replied with a double from Darren Coyle and an Andrew Slaughter strike and they now travel to The match of the day in the National Premier League finished all square at the Dell. The bottom sides Glenorchy and Glenurquhart continued their recent good form with a win at A strike from Aiden MacIntyre earned Oban Camanachd a 1-1 draw against Newtonmore at Mossfield. Kyles Athletic are second following their 3-1 win over Inveraray at Tigh na Bruach. Mathew MacColl scored after 10 and 25 minutes but an own goal reduced the deficit before the break. Fraser MacDonald confirmed the win 12 minutes from the end and Kyles went on to win the match despite Colin MacDonald’s sending off. Glenorchy had a walk over as Lochcarron could not raise a team for their Sutherland Cup tie. Aberdour beat Lewis Camanachd 5-0 in Lochside Rovers overpowered second placed Inveraray 4-1 to stay top of South Division1. Glengarry were convincing 4-0 winners over Caberfeidh. James Henderson put them ahead after 7 minutes and Steven Cameron doubled their lead a minute before the break. Cameron hit another on the hour mark and Mathew Clark completed the scoring after 72 minutes. A Calum Fraser double and a Ross MacAulay strike earned another two points for leaders Glenurquhart against Skye Camanachd at Drumnadrochit. Lovat remain in second place after inflicting Kingussie’s first defeat of the season at Balgate. Jimmy MacKenzie scored a first half double and Martin Anderson netted the third after 65 minutes. David Borthwick pulled a goal back 10 minutes later but young Tom Collings had the final say with a strike 5 minutes from the end. A first half double from Nick Laven gave Kilmallie two goal lead against Newtonmore at the Eilan. Fraser Toyle pulled a goal back for ‘More 5 minutes after the break but the visitors went on to clinch their first win of the season. Willie Gillies was again on target in South Division 2 and his double along with a David Campbell goal gave Taynuilt a 3-1 win at Kyles Athletic scored four without reply at Col Glen. Gordon White, Tom White, Gus Finlayson and Ally MacKay were their scorers. Strachur won by the same margin at home to Ballachulish. Duncan MacNicol scored twice and Donald MacDonald and James Roy got the others. Strachur top the table with seven points although Taynuilt and Kyles Athletic are only one point behind and both have played two games less. Lochaber move into third place as they hit Ardnamurchan for six with Connor Sweeney and Brian White both hitting doubles. Patrick Toll and Callum MacDonald completed the scoring for the Second placed Lochbroom went one better scoring seven at Kincraig. Ian Grant had given the home side the lead after 6 minutes but C MacRae and J MacRae quickly gave Lochbroom the advantage and Boleskine won 2-1 at Strathglass. |
