Skye Camanachd 2 Kilmallie 3. | |
18 April 2009 A last minute John Stewart strike has ended Skye Camanachd’s Camanachd Cup dreams for another season. The match at Pairc nan Laoch on Saturday 18 April 2009 was the proverbial game of two halves. Kilmallie started the better and had most of the early pressure. John Moir was quick in the tackle to prevent a scoring chance and forwards John Stewart and Trevor Jackson looked dangerous. Jamie Gannon saved well with an outstretched right foot after 26 minutes but just 2 minutes later, John Stewart collected a free hit and was allowed to turn and fire into the net, low to Gannon’s right. On the half hour mark Trevor Jackson blasted high into the net and Skye looked in trouble. John Moir picked up a nasty knee cut in 38 minutes but the big defender played on with blood leaking through his bandage. Skye made a much improved start to the second half. Gilleasbuig MacDonald won the throw up and as he surged forward, he had a shot saved by Kilmallie keeper Kevin Toye. On 63 minutes, Ally MacLennan had a run and shot deflected past the post. Jamie MacDonald fired the resultant corner into the danger area and Gilleasbuig MacDonald shot low into the net to bring Skye right back into the game. Jamie Gannon made a terrific save from Trevor Jackson after 71 minutes and 10 minutes later he dived to his right to save from John Stewart. Skye levelled the match with the goal of the game, 4 minutes from the end. Kerr Gibb cleared from defence and Gilleasbuig MacDonald found substitute Norman MacLeod. MacLeod’s deft flick set up Somhairle MacDonald and he made not mistake to level the tie. Just when it seemed as if it would take extra time to separate the sides, John Stewart found space in the Skye area and scored the winner. So Kilmallie go through to the next round of shinty’s top competition and their reward is a second round tie against Skye Camanachd from; Jamie Gannon, Steven Morrison, Dougie Rankin, John Moir, (Iain Nicolson), Allan MacLeod, (Shockie MacLennan), Jamie MacDonald, Gilleasbuig MacDonald, Kerr Gibb, Somhairle MacDonald, Ally MacLennan, (Norman MacLeod), Alan Palmer, Kenny Campbell (captain) |
